I have discovered that  Bill Unruh's  pppconfig
tutorial

 www.theory.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html

had nothing to do with the problems I was having.

setting up my ppp connection.

(was a hardware problem)

It is a fine and useful  document.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
However,  I still think that  not returning my emails

because he couldn't hit the Return icon  with his

plastic rodent  (the reason he gave)  was just

plain  lame,  and no excuse for rudeness and

evasion of responsibility.

So be warned  ------   If  you want him  to answer

your questions,  you have be willing to triple the

amount of spam  you get.  (Or,  I  suspect,  if he

can't find an easy answer,  he will just make up

another lame excuse  for  ignoring your mails.)

This is what it says at the top of my every email,

From :  address is spamtrap. Use this:
        bburhan1  [ AT ]  earthlink  [ DOT]   net

and I've never had a problem with  ANYONE

about it.  Not even multinational corporations nor

busy mailing lists.

I'm sorry Bruce, but you get no sympathy from me. As far as I'm concerned, no
one is _obliged_ to answer unsolicited emails, and especially not ones that
carry bad return addresses.

Bill Unruh has been generous enough to both voluntarily build a public web
page giving critical information to the public _and_ to answer questions about
the subject on this and other newsgroups. He is not under any obligation to
answer unsolicited email, and your temper tantrum about this isn't going to
make him change his mind. All it does is lessen our opinion of _you_.

Actually I answered your question and sent it to the return address you
had in your email. That that address did not get to you is your problem,
and I will not go to any effort to solve that problem for you.

Here is the header of that  email I sent you.

Now you are accusing me of sending spam? Your private email to me is -a
private email to me. I do not sell, give out or otherwise reveal your
private email return address to others. (Unless as above you accuse me
of a variety of bad behaviours)

Well, I am sorry you never got my answer. However I agree-- please warn
everyone that if they want an answer to a  private email to me, they
include a valid return address in their From: address. Any reply will be
sent to that address. I will not hunt through their email for a return
address to send the answer to, and if it bounces, I will simply erase
it, having wasted enough time already answering it originally.

Don't want your sympathy. Said what I had to say and there it is, whether
YOU like it or not.

As far as I'm concerned, no

It says, right at the TOP of the email:

Gee, that is REALLY hard to find or decipher.  If you are a moron....

Another plastic rodent/icon *  who has forgotten how to type.
Go back to windows.

No mailing lists or corporations even say a word about this, and their
mail gets to me everytime.....

You presume to speak for everyone, but you only speak for self-important

For the second time,  THIS is at the top of every
email   I send.

From :  address is spamtrap. Use this:

What a terribly difficult hunt.

You are preposterous.

Bruce

and if it bounces, I will simply erase

And pompous

Don't worry,  I won't be mailing you again,  you
fatheaded bozo.

1. pppconfig

I got all my info from the ISP  and  ran  pppconfig,
but when I get to the part where the serial port is
configured,  I enter  ttyS4,  which is what  I'm told
it is on the startup menu  the program exits  with
error messages.

 (actually, it says  ttyS04,
but there is no such device in  /dev  and  ./MAKEDEV  won't make such a
file, do I
figure they must be synonyms)

The device  ttyS4 does exist  and according to
setserial  -g   /dev/ttys4   it is a-okay,  Identifying the
UART,    port  number and   IRQ  just as they show
up in the startup messages.

Anyone got any ideas?

(John Hassler where are you?  :-)
