Are there any compressed "in-file" file systems available in Linux?

helo!

I am seeking a way to archive files in compressed file-system.

Now I am using etx2fs applied to a file and mount the file
with
mount /mnt/myfile -o loop
(fstab setup accordingly)

But I want files inside myfile to be compressed/uncompressed
transparently.
I dont bother about access time and all that.

So, the question essentially is: can  loop  do this trick
somehow? Or is there any other way to do it with file?
(Dont suggest midnight commander solution - I need
real fs)

Thanks for useful answers!
