Upgrading RH 7.1 to 7.2

Upgrading RH 7.1 to 7.2

Dear all,

I am about to upgrade a laptop with RH7.1 to RH7.2 and I have several
answers which I don't find any answers in the installation guide
rhl-ig-x86-en-72.pdf.

I wonder whether when _upgrading_ I should migrate from ext2 to ext3 and
which partition. In other words will the data be lost when migrating ?

Should I keep the LILO boot or move to GRUB?

Why do I have problem with disk space on /usr _every_ time I have
been upgrading (6.0->6.1, 6.1->6.2, ....) ?
I have a partition
/dev/hda6              1612808   1395536    135344  92% /usr
When upgrading I choose customize the rpms to grab and I get an estimate
of the system size of about 1.4GB which should be pretty ok with my
partition size. Anyway, I get the message that there isn't enough disk space!
The solution is to remove some rpms from the list (i.e. update about 1MB
of system)
I solved by removing some large rpms from the list so that the system size
is estimated to about 1.0GB(!), upgrade and then upgrade manually the
packages....

Sincerely

Patrick

ext3 "conversion" is actually non-obtrusive.  Meaning, nothing is
changed (in particular) to the data structures of the ext2 file system.
The only essential difference is the addition of the journal (which
consumes a modest amount of disk space).  You _should_ migrate as ext3
will at least save you from costly file system damage in the event of a
power loss.

Personally, I think that grub is designed for more novice users (given
the better interface to booting operating systems).  If you're
comfortable with lilo, I'd stick with it - it's tried, true, and tested.

Be mindful about what an upgrade does.  Anaconda, Red Hat's setup
program, utilizes the wonderful feature of RPMs - the ability to upgrade
a package.  If for any reason the package fails to upgrade, RPM will
automatically restore the formerly installed package (like creating a
temporary backup).  If you do not have much space available, it makes
upgrading a problem due to the inability to store old data.

I would recommend eventually having a much larger /usr partition and
migrating your data to it.  /usr/local is usually a constantly growing
directory and having plenty of space for it (definitely more than 1.6GB)
is recommended.

1. Upgrading RH 7.1 to 7.2 says 'some volumes not unmounted cleanly'

        Hi all,

When I try to upgrade my RH7.1 to the 7.2,
after asking me if I want to customize packages to
be upgraded (I say no to this) it says that some
volume have not been unmounted cleanly, reboot and
fsck them... There are no problems with any partition
so I don't understant... I even tried to boot in init
level 1 and unmounted all partitions 1 by 1 and
remounted the / read only to be sure... I checked
with fdisk and there are no other partitions than
the 3 I have...

        Any clue ? Thanx...
