NEC CDR-260 CD-ROM

Post by Sang-Bae K » Wed, 10 May 1995 04:00:00

My PC(Gateway2000 DX2-66) is running Linux 1.2.0 kernel.
It has NEC CDR-260 CD-ROM drive.  I took option
        Include support for IDE/ATAPI CDROMs' CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD y
when I compiled kernel 1.2.0, so as to compile
        /usr/src/linux/drivers/block/ide.c.
Then I did:
        /usr/src/linux/drivers/block/MAKEDEV.ide1
        ln -sf /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom
        mkdir /cd
        mount /dev/cdrom /cd -t iso9660 -o ro
I got the following error message:
mount: /dev/cdrom is not a block device
What's wrong?

Please help me to use CD-ROM in my LINUX machine.

Thanks.

I get the exact same error message.  The kernel sees and
identifies the drive just fine, but I can't mount it.

NEC CDR-260 CD-ROM

Post by Jacob L. Cybuls » Mon, 15 May 1995 04:00:00

A few days ago I've posted a query about this CDROM drive,
which I still cannot install. Since that time we had a hard
disk crash, so if there was a reply I would not have seen
(we have also lost lots of mail and news). So here it goes
again.

I have a Creative SB16 with IDE CDROM on it CD220E.
It works fine with DOS/Windows but could not install as anything
on Linux. I suspect it is too new to be supported (apparently
CD220 is still being worked on so perhaps CD220E is an even newer
addition). When I've installed Matsushita drive on the Creative
interface of my sound card, it works just fine. I haven't tried
to put my CDROM on the IDE card direct as I have no manual to
fiddle with my dip switches (I may have to get it later).
However, does anybody know if this drive is supported, and if
so where can I get a patch or an update to the ide.c sources?
(I have kernel 1.2.5 and this has not worked).

Thanks -- Jacob

Sang:

The syntax for the mount command is

mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/cdrom /mountpoint

You are lucky : I have the same CD drive, with a Gateway machine (P5-90) and with
the same Kernel !
The CD drive is /dev/hd1a : secondary interface (1), first disk (a).
So, type the following lines :
        ln -sf /dev/hd1a /dev/cdrom
        mkdir /cd
        mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /cd -o ro

Olivier.

1. NEC CDR-260 CD-ROM (Gateway IDE CD-ROM)

Has anyone had success with the alpha CDR-260 driver on sunsite?  I
tried patching and compiling on both 1.0.9 and 1.1.18 sources
(slackware) and while both patched and compiled, neither could accesss
the CD.  I tried a cat /dev/idecd (which I created according to the
insructions) and it gave me an I/O error.

If anyone has made this work, please mail me.  (Include kernal
version).  I'll summarize if there is interest.
