ASP Extensions to Apache using Apache::ASP Perl Module

ASP Extensions to Apache using Apache::ASP Perl Module

Post by Stewart Honsberg » Mon, 29 Apr 2002 03:14:12

I've been trying recently to make Apache (1.3.2x) use ASP, and I've pretty
well settled on the Apache::ASP Perl module. However - I'm completely

I've tried using the CPAN method of installation, but all that accomplished
was getting lots of stuff installed under ~root/.cpan/, but nothing
actually installed in the actual Perl directory.

I tried the "Regular Perl Module Install" method, but that caused Apache
to refuse to start with errors.

I assume there are people out there who've installed this successfully,
so I was wondering if somebody could, like, walk me through it. :>

I've installed several Apache modules in past on several different server
configs, but Perl totally eludes me.

I have to get this accomplished shortly, since a client has atleast one,
possibly several customers who absolutely *must* use ASP, and there's
even a possibility that they'll start to demand FrontPage extensions.

Thanks in advance!

I've tried once, then I gave up because the "compatibility" between
the Apache::ASP and the "real" ASP was...hummm... disappointing. If you
want something that can run ASP scripts use Chili!ASP, it's expensive
but it's worth it.

GAAAAAK! Then I can only suggest one thing: bite the bullet and install
a Windows machine with IIS, and use Apache with the proxy module to
pass the connection to the IIS system. It's much more easy and you save
a lot of sweat, tears and frustration, I've never heard of anyone
able to install the *y FrontPage extensions and make them run.
Myself, I've tried 4 time (yes, it's a four), with differents results,
from the total crash of Apache to nothing-at-all.

Note: 90 out of 100 "cracked" web server are running Win/IIS/ASP, be sure
that your "customers" knows that.

Hmmm, which Linux Distro are you using?  If it's Mandrake, then I know they
have an Apache::Asp RPM that you can install.

You aren't going to want to use Apache::ASP then, since it does not provide
*real* ASP functionality.  I can't recall the exact reason, but I think it
had something to do with the fact that it still actually uses Perl (it is a
Perl module, afterall).  Perhaps someone here can provide a *much* better
explanation?

Like another poster, I would recommend that if you are absolutely going to
have to support ASP, then either setup an IIS server to do so, or buy and
install ChilliSoft.  Actually, from the Customer's side, there are scripts
out there that wil convert ASP code to PHP, though never having done it
myself, I don't know how good the conversion is (i.e., if it's a straight
convert-and-go, or if it's more like convert-tweak-and go).  You may want to
look into that, and offerit as a suggestion.

Ugh!  FrontPage extensions are an abomination!  They are such a
pain-in -the-ass, and if you allow the FP Customer to also FTP into their
site, they can mess up their site *so* easily if they;re not 100% sure what
they are doing!

Just my $0.02 :-)

1. Apache and ASP(Apache::ASP giving hell)

Trying to get Apache::ASP to work I *finally* get this error when
looking at the test directory:

[Fri Mar 30 11:17:17 2001] [error] Can't locate object method
"dir_config" via package "Apache" at
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/Apache/ASP.pm line 136.

I have installed the complete Bundle::Apache with CPAN.....

Anyone got any info on getting this to work?....or better yet would be a
better option for ASP if there is one.

I wouldn't be screwing with it, but a class I am taking this Qtr will be
doing ASP and I don't want to have to depend on the lab.
