Nigel,

I'm not convinced that these are 'random' lock-ups.  Does this tend to happen after switching from X to the console and back... or when running a certain program... you must have noticed something that you do which causes the mouse and keyboard to freeze.  X is fairly stable and something else is usually reponsible for errors.

Keyboard/mouse frozen in X

I am running Redhat 6.0 with the 2.2.5-15 kernel as shipped and I am
experiencing random "lockups" where the keyboard and mouse stop responding
when running the X desktop. This occurs in both the Gnome and KDE desktops.

I know the kernel and the X server continue to run as the clock and process
list windows are updated even when the keyboard and mouse are locked.

Rather suprisingly Windows 95  and Windows NT 4 Workstation *do not* exhibit
the same problem when run on this machine.

My hardware is as follows: -

Abit BM6 motherboard (BX chipset)
Celeron 400MHz CPU
128MB PC100 SDRAM DIMM
IBM GXP14 14.4GB UDMA33 HD
Matrox Marvel G200 on IRQ11
Creative Labs SoundBlaster 64 PCI on IRQ 5
Diamond Supra Express 33.6iSP internal ISA modem configured as COM3
Cherry G80-3000 PS/2 keyboard
MS Intellimouse PS/2 v1.1a on /dev/psaux

Has anyone else encountered such problems and effected a cure?

Thanks in advance,

Nigel.

As I recall the stock RH6.0 XFree86 software had some slowdown bug.

Steve,

Thanks for the feedback.

So far I haven't been able to establish a pattern. The last time it froze on
me Linux had been running for a good couple of hours and I was 30 minutes
into a game of Sokoban.

I've been thinking about this a bit more and I have formulated a theory:

When the mouse and keyboard freeze, the rest of the hardware (and software)
appears to continue to function. The keyboard and mouse use separate IRQs (1
and 12 respectively) but AFAIK they share a common bit of hardware. This
used to be an Intel 8029 keyboard controller IC but I understand that the
8029 functionality is now emulated in hardware in the WinBond ASIC used in
most BX chipsets for onboard peripheral I/O.

I am going to try the latest X server for my Matrox G200 (XF86-SVGA) and
failing that I'll start digging around in the source code. Maybe the 8029 is
being disabled inadvertently.

thanks,

Nigel.

I missed the beginning of this thread, but if it relates to Compaq
equipment, then the answer is that they do just that. 2.2.x kernels
are less susceptibel than 2.1.x.

Well, it looks like this wasn't the case for the original poster, however
this is exactly what sometimes causes my setup to "lock" - ie,
switching VCs to XFree86 (including when xdm resets the X server).

As before, the rest of the system is OK - doing 'switchto 1' will get
control back. What made you suggest that switching VCs would cause the
problem? Is there a known solution?

My system is similar to Nigel's - Abit BX motherboard, Matrox Mil G200
and a Logitech PS/2 wheelmouse running RedHat 6.0. When locked, xosview
continues to update but the keyboard and mouse IRQ LEDs fail to light
up.

1. PS/2 mouse with AWE 32 PnP card freezes my keyboard & mouse ???

I don't know if this is best asked here or in the setup group, but I
have to pick one, so..

I am curently running Mandrake v6.1 on an IBM PC350-P100 with a Netgear
NIC, SB AWE32 PnP ISA sound card and a Kensington Orbit trackball
connected to the PS/2 mouse port. This all works just fine, as long as I
don't startx or touch the mouse prior to running isapnp. If I do, the
keyboard/mouse freeze and unless I can telnet to the system to enter a
re-boot command the only other option is to power off the system.

Until this release 7.0 of Mandrake I could always deal with it by
copying an archived copy of isapnp.conf into /etc and rebooting after
installing a new release. Once that was done, it was no longer a
problem.  Now, I need to solve the original problem or learn how to pass
isapnp parameters at boot time. The new Mandrake graphic install starts
X and freezes my system before I can do anything.

Any and all related suggestions would be welcome.  I have long since
exhausted ideas on how to resolve the problem.

Thanks in advance,  Les
