Help needed on RedHat 5.1

Post by Chua » Thu, 06 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I'm new to RedHat 5.1 (in fact, I just installed it yesterday), and I need
a few questions answered. I would appreciate if anyone could enlighten me.

Here they go :

1)
I'm trying to get my Sound Blaster Vibra 16 PnP sound card to work, and
from the Sound-HowTo, I get to know that I have to recomplile the kernel to
add in the sound portion of it.

I enter the command "make config" under the console mode, but I got the
following error message : "make : *** No rule to make target 'config'.
Stop."

I tried entering "make xconfig" under X windows, but it still gives that
error. "make menuconfig" doesn't work either.

What's wrong with it??

(I entered all these commands at /usr/src/linux)

2)
fvwm runs fine for me, but it is only at 16 colors. How can I run it with
higher colors, say 256 colors, and 16bit colors??

Also, how can I make X windows start with 256 (or more) colors by default??

3)
RedHat 5.1 is on the Primary slave drive (hdb), and I have Windows 95
running on FAT32 on the Primary master drive (hda). I set the mount point
of the Windows 95 partition as /win95, and I can see this folder under the
root directory of RedHat. However, I can't seen to see any files in this
folder.

What do I need to do in order to see FAT32 partition under RedHat??

That's all I have for now, and I anticipate more in future. So if you have
any suggestions for me, or any answers, post them to the newsgroup so that
everyone benefits.

TIA.

You need to have the kernel-source RPM installed. Or, better still,
download the update RPMs for kernel 2.0.35 ..and install them all.

I believe RH uses something called sndconfig ... but I manually configged
mine using isapnptools... (which, if everything went OK in your install,
you also have installed.)

What video hardware do you have?

Are you sure it's mounted? Try: mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /win95

It is I belive already compiled in.  It is a module so make sure that
you are running kerneld.

Either get rid of the 8 bit entry in the /etc/X11/XF86config or use
startx -- -bpp 16
to start in 16 bit mode.

You have to mount it. edit /etc/fstab and put in an entry for the
partition

eg
/dev/hda1  /win95  vfat   rw,soft   0 0
and then do
mount -a
or mount /win95

See above

1. i need help networking a win98 to redhat 5.1 using the recomended tulip driver

The driver is probably a .c file , copy that file to
/usr/src/linux/drivers/net.  Type 'cp tulip.c
/usr/src/linux/drivers/net'  without the '' signs.  Once you have copied
that file over you can recompile your kernel.  In the /usr/src/linux
directory type in make menuconfig (it is a menu driven config menu,
under network device make sure the tulip driver is checked , it is
located under either EISA/VLB/PCI  submenu (it make be different
depending on your current kernel version).
When you exit type in make dep ; make clean ; make boot  (I believe that
is correct for RedHat, I haven't used it since last spring..I use all
slackware over here and I use make zlilo .  After that is done type in
make modules ; make modules_install    After that you can reboot.  It
sounds like a lot of work but it is not bad once you do it once.  The ;
stacks the commands sorta like a queue, it will do each command in the
order you type then in one at a time.
