Desktop problem

Post by James Herrin » Sat, 16 Feb 2002 03:10:52

I have a mixed network of Linux and SGI IRIX machines.  All user directories
are hosted on an IRIX machine; users log in either at a Linux or IRIX box.
Some of the users, when logging on to one Linux machine, do not get the
Linux destop (Gnome, KDE, whatever) but do get a Twm window manager destop.
This gives them no Linux desktop functionality and just a limited terminal
window (although they can get as many of those as they want and access to
their home directory on the IRIX host).

If the same user goes to a different Linux box and logs on, he gets the
Linux destop of his choice with all the usual Linux destop bells and
whistles plus access to his home directory on IRIX.

I've checked to make sure user, group id's are the same from Linux to IRIX;
shell choice doesn't seem to matter; I really have no other ideas than
these.  What subtlety am I overlooking?  Any suggestions or solutions would
be greatly appreciated.

Might I suggest that you manaully type the entry in for each user.

IE:  as root type touch .xinitrc on the linux machine and then from
there edit the first line with the desktop command.  Therefore when you
start the X session it will bring up your choice of desktops.
(I know this works for either KDE or WindowMaker.)
