Decent non-X image viewer wanted

Post by Mike Cast » Sun, 29 Jan 1995 08:46:33

Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent non-X (ie,
svgalib) image viewer that supports TGA, PCX or any other non
compressed image format?  The one's that I've tried, namely zgv,
spic, and seejpeg, all support jpeg and gif fine, however I'm
doing a lot of processing, and didn't want to waste time
compressing/decompressing images.  As a result, I want to use
uncompressed image formats, specifically color mapped TGA files.

However, zgv doesn't support tga at all, seejpeg will only
display in HiColor mode (ie, 16k or 32k colors), and spic keeps
dying with an "Illegal instruction" error.

Before I delve into any of these with a de* (which also
means getting jpeg4 back onto my system), I thought I'd check and
see if anyone has any recommendations for a different viewer.

If worse comes to worse, I'll snag the Utah RLE stuff, and write
a getSVGA or somesuch.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

thanks,
mrc

If you are prepared to convert the formats and then view the images
try pbmplus... it supports reading and writing every known format
under the SUN plus just reading or just writing one or two others
as well. This includes RLE, TIFF, GIF, some MAC formats, some Microsoft
formats, G3 Fax fromat, ... Oh yes and there are tools to do various
sorts of image processing thrown in too

*grin*  I know all about PBMPlus.. I ported it to dos... heh.

Thing is, I wanted to use a noncompressed, colormapped
fileformat.  Hence why I mentioned color-mapped TGA's.  It
appears to me that zgv doesn't color map to the same 256 colors
in a prequantized images.. and then again.. it's time I don't
want it to spend doing that.....  *shrug*

I've got UtahRLE up and running for the most part.. soon as I get
the time, I'll rip out the display routines for some other
program and use it for getsvga or soemthing.

Aha... I just snagged the most recent zgv (2.5) from
sunsite...and it now supports ms-win style BMP files, which is
uncompressed colormapped files.  Not targa, but still the type of
format that I wanted.

Also, from the info, it appears that the mapping of prequantized
pbm images to the right colormap has been fixed as well.

At anyrate, I'm happy now.

cheers.
