pls help--can't find "libm.so.4"

Post by Tucker Shar » Sun, 09 Nov 1997 04:00:00

When I try to execute  I get the message

  "Can't find library   libm.so.4  "

(Using Unix's "locate" command, I can find "/lib/libm.so.5" but not
the above file.) I run Red Hat 4.0 on a pentium.  Should I download a
new package?  What's going on (I'm a bit of a linux novice)?

Thanks

You should download a old package ;-)

libm.so.4 is an older version of the C math library. If you need some
library, in most cases you can make a symlink to one with a higher
version number. But as a Linux novice, it is saver to get the real lib.
How to get a file: (I know, some gurus will start screaming, but that's
how _I_ do it) Visit http://www.altavista.digital.com . Enter the file's
name and click `search`. Read something about people with the same
problem, then pick one of the ftp servers and download the file. Login
as root and move it to /lib . On Linux you have to run ldconfig every
time you add a new library.

Hope this helps, Harald

When you try to execute WHAT?  Whatever it is, upgrade it.  It wants
a very old maths library which you haven't got and shouldn't now
attempt to install.
