Linux realplayer G2 beta

I got the exact same problem...  Real will not post a new version any soon.
I could get it to run any better as root.  The only way I found was to back
-date my system.  I guess we have to stay tuned to Real's site...

I installed the linux realplayer G2 beta back in July and it's
been working fine.  Today it informed me that it had expired
and I need to update it from real's web site.

OK, fine.  But I don't see any update for the linux version
available.  Nor does there appear to be one I can purchase.

What gives?  How can I make this thing work?

I discovered the same problem if I download the RH 5.2/6.0 (RPM) update.

However, if I load the Linux 2.0/2.2 update, I get a new version which

I'm listening right now.

Hi...I received an email form Real saying that a new version is available
as a self-extracting installer.
The RPM is not available yet.

Seems to work fine.

        Do me a favour, and run ldd on that new versio nof realplayer,
and also the output of 'ls -l /lib/libc.so* . I'm interested in knowing
if Real actually got the libc problem down. Most likely, they didn't,
but let me know what that is. Thanks in advance.

ldd realplay gives:

        libXt.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6 (0x40005000)
        libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x4004f000)
        libXext.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x400f5000)
        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x40101000)
        libstdc++.so.2.8 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.2.8 (0x40104000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0x40149000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40166000)
        libSM.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6 (0x40259000)
        libICE.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6 (0x40262000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00000000)

ls -l /lib/libc.so* gives:

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           14 Aug  1 21:01 /lib/libc.so.5 ->libc.so.5.4.46
-rw-r--r--   1 root     root       586720 Feb  8  1999 /lib/libc.so.5.4.46
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           13 Jun 18 19:22 /lib/libc.so.6 ->libc-2.1.1.so

Hope that's useful.

will not install so as to run from netscape.  Just another piece o' shit

Seems OK here. I just listened to a 48 minute piece on the
NPR web site and it worked fine.

It works fine here also. I listened to a hockey game the other night.
It even gets along with esd.

1. Difficulties with RealPlayer G2 beta

Hello, all.

I'm having some difficulties with RealPlayer G2 beta, running on RH6,
kernel 2.2.12.  I have browsed through dejanews and searchlinux and not
found anything related to my problem, so I don't think this is a faq.

I've downloaded the G2 beta for linux, both as RPM and as the
self-extracting installer and gotten the same results with both.  I'm just
trying to run it from the command line -- I'll worry about Netscape later.

First, and this is really annoying, it asks me for my registration info
EVERY TIME I start the stupid program.  Is this normal?  Note that it
*does* create the file .RealNetworks_RealShared_00 in my home directory,
which does contain the registration info.

Second, I've downloaded a number of .ram's, which are pointers to the real
streaming audio source on the web.  When I play any of them, the player
downloads, buffers, and proceeds to emit some of the most unpleasant sounds
I've ever heard in my life: scratchy, *REALLY* loud, and way too slow.  (By
that, I mean the kind of effect you get if you play a 78 single at
33.3rpm.)  I've tried messing with both of the options under sound card
compatilibity settings.  These do have an effect, but the sound is still
horrible.  (Incidentally, these settings aren't preserved over a restart
either.)

Is it simply the case that my sound card isn't supported?  What's the
scoop?

The sound-related lines from /etc/conf.modules are:

alias sound sb
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330

And /proc/modules says:

nls_iso8859-1           2020   1 (autoclean)
nls_cp437               3548   1 (autoclean)
vfat                    9180   1 (autoclean)
fat                    30464   1 (autoclean) [vfat]
opl3                   11208   0
sb                     33620   0
uart401                 5968   0 [sb]
sound                  57240   0 [opl3 sb uart401]
soundlow                 300   0 [sound]
soundcore               2372   6 [sb sound]

The sound hardware in question is on my motherboard, the Intel AL440LX.
Normal sound under Linux works fine: I can play .au files, QuickTime movies
with xanim, and the sound in Civilization:Call To Power works fine.

I've got the player installed to ~/libexec/RealPlayerG2, and
REALPLAYER_HOME is set appropriately, according to the README.

Is this just an example of how beta G2 is under Linux, or what?

Thanks much,

Richard
