Question about SMP

Question about SMP

Post by Thomas Sengot » Sat, 13 Jan 1996 04:00:00

Hello,
i tried to install a SMP-Version aof Linux-1.3.56 on a Data General
Server AV 3000 with 2 Prozessors. I recognized two major problems:
1. The Wide-SCSI-Bus AHA7870 hangs while booting the system
2. Only 1 Prozessors was recognized

My question is, if somebody on this planet is dealing with the same problem.
If you can answer this question with yes, please contact me at:

or post to the newsgroup

thank you
Thomas Sengotta

Aint tried it yet, but I _know_ the aha7870 isn't fully supported on linux yet. The one I'm
after is the NCR DIFF SCSI!! attaching a CLARiiON could be very interesting!

RedHat's latest distr. had a patch for the aha7770, which worked on an HP
NetServer for me, you may want to see what that patch does...

1. general Question about SMP

Hi there,

could someone give me some impressions about FreeBSD and SMP-Systems
(Intel-based). I'm especially interested, how it scales on machines with
more with 4 prozessors (maybe 8). Could someone compare it to Linux in
this case.

Currently the other servers running linux, but I have heard about how
stable fBSD is and IMHO there are at least some components in fBSD which
are superior to Linux (network layer for instance), so I will give it a
try ... ;)

the machine will (probably) look like this: Quad Xeon 550, 1GB Ram, 60GB
Raid 5. It will run a MySQL Database with about 20 GB Data, 100
concurrent Connections ans some 100 Tables

Anyone who could compare this to a linux machine ?

TIA, and greetings from germany
