packet writing on CDRW

I would like to get udf working with my cdburner.  I want to be able to
use packet writing to mount the drive and use it.  I see that there is a
patch for kernels pre-2.4.8.  I have the latest, 2.4.19 and was getting
the impression from websearch material that the patch was merged.  Is
this true?  If so, where do I find that option in the config menu?

thanks

Ahhh....I found this message in an archive (just had to do the right
magic in google and ask on a newsgroup - always results in you finding
the answer yourself shortly after :P)
http://lists.suse.com/archive/packet-writing/2002-Aug/0083.html that
complains about the sourceforge account not being active anymore :P  The
latest patch is here:

it applies without flaw.

Now to get it working...

This is interesting info - I remember attempting to get a set of patches
that allowed this ability (essentially DirectCD under Linux) but couldn't
find a set of patches that worked with a post 2.4.0-test? kernel.  If
these patches are worth something, it would be great to get them
incorporated into the 2.6 kernel considering many companies who have
relied on flash PC cards to transfer data from one computer to another are
now choosing to use their CD-RW drives to get the better space - 12X CD-RW
is nice and fast, and DirectCD (from Roxio) is pre-installed with most
modern computers nowadays that come standard equipped with CD-RWs).

Unfortunately for me, I use Linux on my workstation - so I can read but
can't update or write to their happy little discs.

The patches applied flawlessly to the stock 2.4.19 kernel and I was
formatting a UDF cd in mere minutes...of course it took 15 later before
I could try and mount it but that went without flaw as well.  I only
question if it is fully compatible with DirectCD and other windows
versions.  I tried to use it at school and Windows XP wanted to reformat
it to write to it.  Reads work fine though and I have no idea what is
installed there.  I have not tried the other way...win formated linux
mounted.

Basically grabbing the above patch and following the directions included
in the sourceforge download gets you up and running.
