lpr: connect: Connection refused jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.

lpr and/or lpd mysteriously stopped working.  I'm not sure why, as I haven't
tried printing for a couple of weeks.  I upgraded to Xfree 3.3.2 today,
libc 5.4.44 a while back.  Have tried kernels 2.0.34 and 2.1.108.  Yes, lpd
is running, and I know about the switch from lp1 to lp0.  I can cat something
to the printer, and also read back

CODE=10001
DISPLAY=PRINTER READY

I did a strace of an lpr command and got this: [abbreviated]

open("/var/spool/lpd/pencil/tfA268Aa00311", O_RDWR) = 3
read(3, "H", 1)                         = 1
lseek(3, 0, SEEK_SET)                   = 0
write(3, "H", 1)                        = 1

unlink("/var/spool/lpd/pencil/tfA268Aa00311") = 0
socket(PF_UNIX, SOCK_STREAM, , 0)       = 3
connect(3, {sun_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/dev/printer"}, 14) = -1 ECONNREFUSED (Connection refused)

1. lpr: connect: Connect refused Jobs queued, but cannot start daemon

I don't know what I did, everything was working perfectly. I had the printer set up on another linux box, with ip in hosts.equiv. I seem to be able to print some of the time even with this message. Nothing is in any of my logs. I added -l to the startup daemon. What else, can someone suggest, I do to track this problem down?

Thanks!
