Main and ftp problem with RH7.2

Post by Mark Heal » Sun, 10 Mar 2002 12:23:34

I installed RH7.2 because my 6.2 setup was cracked (largely my
fault for not keeping up with patches) and there were too many updates
to deal with.

Anyway, there are lots of things I don't understand and I don't have
the time to get a full grasp of them before I get everything working.

I can't get the mail and ftp working.

When I try to mail to the server from another account it never
arrives.  When I try to use a client on another machine to check
mailboxes it won't connect.  And of course I can't send through it
using a client on another machine.

When I try to fpt to it I get a message saying that that the server
may be down?

With 6.2 I dealt with this using linuxconf.  It wasn't installed with
7.2 but was on the CD.  I installed it and it didn't have the options
that the old one did.

How do I get these servcices up and running?

Read the RELEASE-NOTES on CD 1 and implement the instructions therein.

It is down.  You have to activate it by editing the file in
/etc/xinetd.d directory and restarting xinetd.

Linuxconf is completely broken and is useless anyway.

It doesn't say anything about mail systems.

Thanks it worked.  Now a somewhat tangental question.  Why would you
have each service activation determined by an individual file.  It
seems to me that it would be easier to have one file with the paths
and filenames of the relevant programs with any switches in one file.

Am I being a complete dope here?

Automatically installing, upgrading and removing service packages is
lot easier when you can just add/remove a file instead of trying edit a
configuration file from a script.

I had not checked my 7.2 CD when I wrote that and simply "assumed" that
Red Hat had done the same thing to sendmail with 7.2 which they had
done with 7.1.  My apologies.

Is sendmail actually started on your machine, with the -bd option?

I took a look at /etc/mail/sendmail.mc and indeed Red Hat did the same
thing with 7.2 as they did with 7.1.  Excerpt from that file:

dnl This changes sendmail to only listen on the loopback device
127.0.0.1
dnl and not on any other network devices. Comment this out if you want
dnl to accept email over the network.
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')

IIRC, and I don't seem to have the 7.1 CDs, comment out the
DAEMON_OPTIONS line by pre-pending "dnl" to the line and executing

# m4 sendmail.mc > ./sendmail.cf
# /etc/init.d/sendmail restart

Looking in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc (the .mc from which the default
sendmail.cf is made) you'll find this:

dnl This changes sendmail to only listen on the loopback device 127.0.0.1
dnl and not on any other network devices. Comment this out if you want
dnl to accept email over the network.
  DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')

which prevents any machines other than localhost from connecting to
your sendmail. If you want to connect to port 25 on this machine from
anywhere else in the world (or anywhere else on your own LAN) you'll
need to comment out that line and rebuild the sendmail.cf. For
instructions on how to do that, see /usr/share/sendmail-cf/README.

Did that and now I get a relaying denied message.

You failed to mention anything about trying to relay mail in your
original post.  Are we supposed to read your mind?

I recommend that you purchase O'Reilley's book "Sendmail" and give it
some study if you want to do more than what the basic sendmail install
gives you.

Ok now jargon is getting confusing.  When I wrote "relaying" that was
just the term used in the message bounced message.

What I am trying to do seems relatively simple.  I managed to do it
with 6.2.

I want mail to the domain to go to the machine in question.  My ISPs
nameserver takes care of this.

I want to be able to use clients on other machines to be able to
retrieve mail and send mail with the machine in question.

That is indeed relaying in addition to pop or imap service and I cannot
help you there.  The setup should be more or less the same as it was
with RH-6.2.

Sendmail is used on such a server to send mail out to the internet and
receive mail to that server.  Your server needs to be running a pop or
imap service for the client hosts to be able to retrieve their mail
from that server.

1. "increased VM size+Main-memory" better than "Main-memory+Hard-disk" ??

I am explaining what we do in our application. Please suggest your
opinions.

There are process-A and process-B running in the same Solaris machine.
Process-B gets message from Process-A and it immediately forwards the
message to an application(say, MYAPP) through http. After sending a
message, we wait for an ack from MYAPP. If we do not receive within
certain time, then, we store that message in Main-memory. We keep on
storing such failed messages in memory. After the memory is full, then
process-B will start storing such messages in the disk. After some
indication, process-B will start taking the messages one by one from
the memory(and then from disk) and start forwarding that to MYAPP.

I have control over only Process-B. How do I optimize this approach?
Also, I would like to replace "Main-memory+Hard-disk" with "increased
VM size+Main-memory" so that OS will take responsibility rather than
we writing directly into the disk. What is your opinion about it?

More detailed explanations will be appreciated!

Thanks!
