Thanks! I remember seeing MAKEDEV somewhere in looking around, but
when I do a grep in the ftape dir in the kernel source and also
in the HOWTO file nothing comes up...Anyway I got the 500K gzip off sunsite
and it had MAKEDEV.ftape and that made the various devices. I wonder what
happened to them before...I'm sure I had the tape working with linux.
Maybe they somehow got lost when I copied linux from one partition to another.

ftape: no /dev/ftape or other

Post by David Ashl » Mon, 03 Nov 1997 04:00:00

I had the tape drive working with linux before (Colorado jumbo-250) but
I don't remember what I did. Now I don't have any of the /dev files
mentioned in the Ftape-HOWTO file, such as
/dev/ftape
/dev/rft[0-4]
/dev/*tape*   (nothing with tape in it)
/dev/*rft* (nothing with rft in it)

At boot time I get the message
ftape-2.08 960314 for Linux 1.3.70
During the boot when all the other messages are going by...So I think
it's in my kernel.

Maybe about 6 months ago I had the tape working with linux but I don't
know how I did it or what has changed since then...

Any help appreciated--Thanks!

IIRC ftape2.08 came with a utility 'MAKEDEV', which when executed will
create the right /dev entries.  But most of all, you need to read the
doc's.  If you don't have a copy of these, you'd better get a fresh
copy.  Try looking at Claus-Justus Heine's site:

It should have the information you need.

1. problem using ftape "can't open /dev/ftape"

Hi,

I just installed Linux 2.0.0 on my machine; upgrading from a
previous version.  Before I installed the new version, I tar'd
the old version out to tape.  I installed a new kernel that
had ftape support, and have verified that I also installed the
ftape package.

When I try to see what's on the tape, using:

      tar tvf /dev/ftape

I see the msg "Can't open /dev/ftape  No such device".  I checked the
/dev directory, and ftape is set up as a link to /dev/rft0, which is
set up as a char mode device.  The permissions for /dev/rft0 are set
at crw-r-----.  Any thoughts on what could be causing this msg?

I looked at the man pages for tar and mt, as well as the FAQ and
HOWTO for ftape, but saw nothing that looked similar to this.  I'm
guessing this is a general unix issue, which, being a newbie, has me
baffled....
