X11 sever-client permissions

X11 sever-client permissions

Post by Peter Wrig » Sat, 08 Jul 1995 04:00:00

What I want to do is too hook into an SGI box with my Linux box and run
X-windows programs and get my computer (the linux one) to desplay the
result.  But I come up with permission problems.  The error I get is.

tmgindy 11# Xlib: connection to "imr-nt5:0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Error: Can't open display: imr-nt5:0.0

tmgindy is the sgi box, and imr-nt5 is the linux box.  I'm sure it's a
very simple thing to fix I just don't know enough about X-windows to fix
it.  Does anyone out there know who's side needs to be fixed?

TIA

Thanks.  That was exactly what I needed.  Tryed it and it worked.

You should be aware that this solution allows any connections to your X
server from any machine that can network to yours. Whether this is a
problem depends on your environment, but it can range from mild
annoyance to serious security problems. Some things that can happen are

 - accidentally displaying windows on your screen (if people don't set
   their DISPLAY variable correctly).

 - deliberately displaying windows on your screen to annoy you.

 - messing with with your display's resource database to annoy you more.

 - silently snooping all your keypresses to discover your passwords.

Instead of "xhost +", you can use "xhost +sginame" (I forgot the name of
your SGI), which will only allow connections from people logged onto the
SGI. For better protection you can use cookies.

For more information there is the X man page (under ACCESS CONTROL) and
the Xsecurity man page.

1. Help: Getting start with Sever-client programming

I am a new user of unix. Who can give me some examples of getting start with the
network programming. My home work is to design a graphics viewer: Server-Client mode
this is too difficult for me. Who can give me some example programs. The home work
requires me to design a server and clients. The server can be invoked by the clients
and own a database of .GIF pictures. The clients can see the .GIF by download from
server or directly.
