You could try two things, check the man page for lpr and take a look at
the "-s" parameter, or, type "gs -?" and take a look at the -sOutputFile
parameter.

One or both of them may be of help.

ghostscript won't print a big file

There's an option in the /etc/printcap file that limits the size
of print jobs. If you don't set it then it defaults to 1MB, and
the printer will *after this. 18/70 * 4MB ~ 1MB, so I suspect
it's probably that. The option is mx and it's numeric, so in
the printcap file it should appear as

:mx#XXXX:

where XXXX is the maximum job size (kb). If you set it to zero
it allows jobs of anysize to be printed.

For more info see printcap(5) and the BSD 4.3 Line spooler manual
(which you can get from the Linux Documentation Project).

Hope that helps.

ghostscript won't print a big file

Post by Preston Guis » Thu, 14 Mar 1996 04:00:00

This is probably fairly late, but here's a simple solution.

When you generate the .PS file or the raw file for your
particular printer (e.g., you're using an InkJet, like I do),
and the file is fairly large, rather than trying to break the
file up with ghostscript, you can instead get the printer to do
all the hard work.

lpr works by copying the document to the spool directory.
However, there are limits to the size of the spool directory,
hence for big files, it will print some of it and generate the
'too big' sort of error that you've been talking about.

Instead, generate the file (rather than trying to print
directly from ghostscript) and tell lpr to use a symbolic link
when you invoke it...

lpr -s insert_your_filename_here.ps

That way, lpr refers instead to the file in its current
location rather than trying to copy it.  Of course, don't
delete or modify this file while lpr is still printing or very
strange things will happen...

1. Q: ghostscript 5.10 previews but won't print

I just installed Aladdin Ghostscript 5.10 (1997-11-23)  on my Linux
2.0.0 kernel system
and now I can't print postscript files anymore. Unfortunately, I don't
get any error messages
so it is difficult to tell what is happening. Text files print fine to
my laserjet5, which uses
the Magicfilter-1.2 drivers. Also, gs and the ghostview previewer appear
to work fine
when sending output to an Xwindow, but when I use lpr to print a
postscript file, nothing
happens. The printer doesn't seem to get any data, and the print queue
has nothing in it.
How can I find out what I am doing wrong?

Thanks,
Charlie
