problems installing software

Post by <brianl.. » Tue, 30 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I just finished downloading Corel Wordperfect 8 from cnet.com. I downloaded
it in seven segments. When I tried to unzip and untar though, I got this
message...

gunzip: GUI00.gz: not in gzip format
Moves
Name
Runme
Readme
linux/bin/mwpae
linux/bin/mwpaf ....

different filesnames continued to scroll down. Then when I tried to run the
installation program and got this ...

$ ./Runme

Did you unzip and untar the files you downloaded? (y/n) y

Error: Nothing new to install.

I'm lost. While I get the impression that I didn't correctly unzip the
files, I can't understand why the filenames scrolled down. Any help would
be much appreciated. Thanks!!

Brian

If you have dowloaded using Netscape, you probably didn't know that
Netscape unpacks (gunzips) while downloading saving the file with it's
original extension. So after dowloading, you don't have a commpressed file
anymore. My advice: try using wget, ncftp or ftp for dowloading from now
on, so you will save some time/problems.

P.S. Did you read the Readme file?

You can fix that with an X resource:

        Netscape*encodingFilters:

That unsets the default value of:

        *encodingFilters:                         \
        x-compress :  : .Z     : uncompress -c  \n\
        compress   :  : .Z     : uncompress -c  \n\
        x-gzip     :  : .z,.gz : gzip -cdq      \n\
        gzip       :  : .z,.gz : gzip -cdq      \n

See Netscape.ad in the NS installation directory for details.

Thx:) but I don't use Netscape for downloading (except for gifs/jpegs).
It's useful for saving the links though. Other utilities are faster.
