Yes, get the source for ls and recompile it with the static option and all
will be well.

Strange, every Distribution I have gotten over the past few years
has had the anonymous ftp setup for me, so I didn't have to do anything
except add files. (SLS, Slackware and RedHat).

1. make sure ls is in the bin path relative to the ftp home directory.

2. make sure /dev/null is in the dev directory relative to the ftp home
directory.

3. either use a statically linked ls or track down _all_ the libraris that ls
wants and make sure copies are in the lib path relative to the ftp home dir.

4. make sure the perms on ls will enable the user to call it.

more than the above would require more info on your part.  however, take a
look at a book on setting up a web server (i believe the book also covers ftp)
that i think is bound in blue cover.  i'll try to track down the name of the
book but it is something like "building a web server" or very close to that.

item 2 seems to get me quite often.  even after setting up anon ftp on a few
machines.

i'll follow this discussion up with a question of my own.  i know, rtfm to find
the answer but i just thought i would post the question while i was here.

do you have to enable a dummy ftp account to get a valid login id of ftp for
anonymous ftp?  i.e some people find it hard to type anonymous so they would
rather use ftp for the login name.  is it just a matter of putting in an
entry in the passwd file (starred out) so that ftp is a valid login id but
  not a valid entry?

Is this the general procedure to get any utility working with wuftp?  I.e.,
if I wanted to give ftp-ers the ability to link files, would I recompile
ln with the static option?

1. wu-ftpd "ls" doesn't work with anonymous?

Hi all,

I have wu-ftpd installed on my Solaris 2.4
It works perfect with regular accounts
Today I tried to get it works with anonymous connection.
I created ftp account and "ftp tree" with
bin, usr/lib, etc, pub, dev directories and apropriated(I hope) files
in these directories.
Login process looks fine and "anonymous" users
receive "Guest login Ok", but if I try to do "ls" or "get"
some file I receive:
"Can't create data socket (0.0.0.0,20): Bad file number"

The regular users still operate normaly.

What's may be wrong with it?
Any help/solution will be greatly appreciated
TIA
Daniel Israel
