LILO misfire, partition dead

Post by Mitchell L. Reierso » Fri, 17 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Hello everyone,

I am looking for advice concerning a Win95 partition that was nailed
by LILO during installation.

The problem was caused by

lilo.conf:
  boot = /dev/hda1, rather than boot = /dev/hda

Now the partition appears as invalid media type.  I would guess that
only a small portion of the partition is corrupted and that most of the
data could be recovered.  Does anyone have suggestions as to how I can
recover some of the data or repair the corrupted partition?

Thanks,

Mitch

Please check with the lilo doc, but I guess you installed lilo in
the boot sector of your primary partition, which seems to be a Win95
one, instead of installing into the root sector of the drive. Right?

So, only the boot sector is overwritten. AFAIK nothing else.

Check the man page, there is an uninstall option for lilo. Check
carefully, it might be able to install the original boot sector of your
Win95 partition, and you're up and alive again.

These are just ideas, and I can'tr verify at the moment, so I would like to
see someone second them.

Hartmut.

Use the lilo uninstall option to restore the old boot sector.
Alternatively you can copy the backup (boot.0301) back by hand using
"dd".

For details see the LILO manual.

If all else fails (restoring the boot sector from Linux) you could try
making a Linux boot floppy (if you have not already done so):

Boot with the Win95 rescue disk (you did make one didn't you?) and
from there type 'fdisk /mbr'.

Then you should be able to reboot into Linux (via floppy) and run
'lilo' with the corrected configuration.

Using the "dd" method saved me when NT scribbled over my win95
partition's bootblock.

 How?

1. Dead Kernel & Dead LILO

HELP!!!   I recompiled the kernel with networking support, and it died
toward the end of the "make
zlilo" step.  I cant remember the exact error message, but I think it
was related to lilo, which is
done at the end of the make.  Now when booting, I get a message saying,
"run out of room  ----system
Halted-----" message.
An older kernel which worked at one time, gives the same message,
although I didnt save the older
System.map file which went with it, (my mistakeI guess this matters).
I do not have a boot diskall I have is a MINIX boot and a rescue root
disk.  I can mount the hard
disk, however when I try to run lilo with the correct lilo.conf file, I
get a message that says, "Dont
know how to handle device 0x0100."  Ive tried a lot of different
things, to no avail.  At one time I
had a second hard drive which is now removed from the system, but is
also removed from the fstab file.
What can I do without reinstalling the entire system???  Any help is
greatly appreciated.
I have a:
Compaq DeskPro 6000 Pentium Pro-200
Adaptec 2940U
Jaz Drive internal SCSI
SCSI CD-ROM
3COM etherlink III
256 Mbyte Ram
