I want install a new kernel so first I tried to
edit my /etc/linux.conf so I can keep the old one if something goes
wrong.
If I change the labels or do anything else nothiong changes.
Why?

I suppose you're talking about lilo configuration file ?
have you run lilo -C /etc/linux.conf after modification ?
it should help...

you have to run lilo after changing your lilo.conf.
