update to the most recent OBP.
120GB shouldn't be a problem.
I installed a 160GB in an Ultra 10, and AFAIK they're have basically
identical hardware.

As for Sol8, I'm not quite sure. I added the HD to an Ultra 10 running
Sol9 08/03. It might be a restriction of Sol 8.
Try upgrading to MU5 and check for IDE patches...

hope this helps,

David

Yes. I've successfully used a 120 GB drive on Solaris 9 and latest OBP.

AFAIK, this is wrong. Are you sure you can use the entire 160GB? There
is limit on the hard drive size on a u5/10 due to pci bus
restrictions...127 GB

How much of the 160 GB  did you get as a filesystem?
From what I understand the maximum disk size(due to IDE limits( is
137GB, can you confirm that?

i updated the OBP to 3.31.
didn't work. still shows up as 31GB.
[ cy 65529 alt 2 hd 16 sec 63]
have no special entries in format.dat. (should i need to add one?)
the kernel patch is 108528-05 (should this be updated???)

1. 120GB Maxtor 4G120J6 Hard Disk support

Hi,

Please advise ASAP if Maxtor 4G120J6 120GB IDE disk is supported on any
sun hardware platform. This disk is specified as having 238,216
cylinders, 16 heads, and 63 sectors.

I have tried it on an an ultra5 (with OBP 3.31) but format command only
shows this disk as being 20GB with 41606 cylinders. I tried configuring
the disk as an 'other' type but when I enter the respective value for
cylinders the format command reports 'out of range' --- it seems that
the maximum cylinders count is approx 65000, giving a maximum disk size
of 32GB.

There are SunBlade 100 machines here that I can use to install this hard
disk onto, BUT will SunBlade 100 support 120GB hard disk.

I would appreciate if someone can advise on the best way forward here.

(The other option may be linux on an Intel platform -- would that be
feasible?)
