Network backups

Post by Deryk Bark » Sat, 20 Aug 1994 03:43:54

I need to be able to back up our SPARC across the local net, using an
8mm drive attached to a VAX running (yuck!) VMS.

Apparently VMS understands rdump, but as this is a Berkelyish command
I wonder:
        1. does the ufsdump command use the same protocol as rdump?
        2. will dump reappear in Solaris 2.4? (We are currently running
           2.3)
        3. does anyone have any other brilliant suggestions?

Yes, it is call rmt and there is a man page on it.

No, dump is used to dump selected parts of an object file, such as
the elf headers or this symbol table.  However ufsdump will remain forever.

If dump form a sparc 4.1.X machine works dumping to the VAX then ufsdump
from a 2.X machine should work as well, as long as it is a sparc.  There
are extension for dumping Intel, you know, byte swapping, that your VAX
machine probably doesn't undestand.

1. Network Backup and RedHat

        Hi,

With the old version of RedHat (3.03), we made our networks backups
with afio and the tob script with no problem. But when we actualice our
systems to the 4.0, we only can backup the system that have the tape unit,
because the rest of the hosts give continuosly I/O tape errors.

We have a Colorado T1000. Anybody know the solve of our problem, or
another form of make net's backup that don't use the ftape driver? (I
suppose that it have the fault)

                                                Un saludo.
