NIS+ DNS forwarding and PC-NFS

NIS+ DNS forwarding and PC-NFS

Post by Robert M. Mart » Fri, 15 Dec 1995 04:00:00

An interesting problem greeted me this morning.

        I've a collection of PCs running SUN PC-NFS 5.1a
and using a SS 20 (Solaris 2.4) as their NIS server, pcnfsd,
license server, etc.

Right now the PCs cannot resolve IP address that are *not*
in the Sparc's NIS+ host table.  The Sparc has been doing the
DNS forwarding thing for the PCs for a year and a half with a
problem.  UNIX applications on the Sparc are *NOT* having
any problem with DNS, just the PCs.

The University provides the nameserver and they have
had problems keeping it running for the past several weeks
but it *is* up and running right now.

If I set the PCs to straight DNS they work fine, thus
I suspect something is out of whack on the Sparc but this strikes
me as odd since, as I said, the UNIX apps are not effected.

I checked rpc.nisd to make sure the -Y and -B options
were set - they were.  I've also performed the most common
solution to problems on my 3B2s, reboot.  Still no change.

        Any suggestions?

1. DNS problems w/ PC-NFS 5.1 (and 101318-68)

        Greetings,

A new and interesting problem has cropped up with my machines running
PC-NFS 5.1 (using NIS) served from a SS20, Solaris 2.3 acting as the NIS+
master server, pcnfsd server, etc.  I just put up Solaris patch 101318-68
last night.

Anyhow all this morning was fine and good.  Now this afternoon
PC applications like Mosaic and Netscape cannot do DNS anymore - the
Sun-Select apps (telnet, ping, ftp, etc) still do DNS just fine.  Any host
that is not in the Sparcs host database (which is most of 'em when using
Netscape) cannot be found by those two apps - anything that *is* in the
Sparc's hosts database works just fine.  Why would the NIS+ -> DNS forwarding
work okay for some PC apps (SUN's) and not for others?  ('cause they're
Sun's apps, right?)

Yes, rpc.nisd is running with -Y and -B, I just double checked to
be sure.

Anybody have any words of wisdom?
