Terrence, the file system tries to reserve about 10% (a default) of
its capacity.  As root, you can continue filling the file system
until you reach it's true capacity.  Consider it a valve designed
to keep a normal user from wreaking havoc with your system.

The ufs filesystem reserves 10% of the disk space.  This is
necessary to achieve its fast performance.  df shows this.

I have a replacement program for df, di ver 1.19 that I can
e-mail to anybody who wants it.  It allows you to choose the
display format, including displaying the percentage used
as the actual value, not including the 10% overhead.  It is
highly portable, making an excellent system administration
tool for those with heterogenous networks.

Brad,
I would be interested in this program called di. Please let me know
where I can get it.
Thanks.

1. Problems with "df" and "du" on "/var"

Hello,

I hope you have some help for a "UNIX-Newbie". Here is my problem:

When I start the command "df" on the directory "/var" (on a UNIX-Server with
SunOS 5.6) I get the information, that approximately 113 MB disk space are
occupied. When I use the command "du -k /var" the system says that are about
50 MB (58 MB as root) in use.
By doing the same process on other directories, I have no problems.

Can you help me? I hope so. Thanks.

Greetings
Michael
