HYPERtape is based on a client/server model, providing remote node
backup functionality. HYPERtape supports more than 34 Platforms
(openVMS, UNIX (DEC, SUN, HP, SIEMENS, IBM), UNICOS, DOMAINOS, DYNIX,
NETWARE, OS400, MVS, DOS, WIN/NT, WIN95, WFW, MAC and many more).
HYPERtape provides automatic, unattended backup of workstations,
departmental servers, and enterprise servers across networks and
supports a variety of tape, optical, and other magnetic storage media.
The product is primarily designed for high- speed network backup to
automated high capacity peripheral systems. It can handle an unlimited
number of concurrent sessions between any number of network nodes. Since
it is network-based, any file stored within HYPERtape-based systems can
be backed up from any node on the network.
The idea behind HYPERtape is to bring the workstation and server data to
the mainframe, where they can use the existing mainframe storage
management facilities. Once there, it is just a matter of extending
existing mainframe storage management capabilities. If the right
operating system is available and enough bandwidth is present to send
data to the mainframe, a user can have the LAN-based data managed by a
system managed storage environment.
HYPERtape allows administrators to constantly monitor all network backup
and restore operations. E-mail messages are sent to inform them of the
status of backup and restore operations. If an error occurs, E-mail
warning messages are issued automatically. The messages include pointers
to the detailed log files that can be used to determine the cause of the
operation failure.
HYPERtape consists of three distinct logical components -- the Control
Node, the Backup Node, and the Service Node. The Control Node uses the
control path to initiate backup from a Service Node over the data path
to the Backup Node and to the attached storage device.
All three nodes work together to create a connection that ensures a
reliable network data transfer. Any of the supported network protocols,
including TCP/IP and DECnet, can be used to establish sessions between
the nodes. It is common to select one protocol to be used for the
control path and another one, geared toward higher throughput, for the
data path. Once the backup operation is completed, the Service Node
notifies the Control Node of the status. This concept allows for a fully
centralized network backup management.
