Help:Faulted Printers

Post by Alan B. Zha » Thu, 14 Dec 1995 04:00:00

I have posted this message on the net and got no responses. I am not sure
whether I did not ask the right questions or it is too difficult.

I have two HP J2552A JetDirect cards in two printers: HP laserjet 4m and Hp
Laserjet 4m Plus. I installed the Jetadmin software which is the software
for the card on SunOs 4.1.4 machines. This machine is a NIS server and I
assigned the IP adress for these two printers as laserjet1 and laserjet2.

I have several machines running Solaris 2.4 and I configured their printing
services such that their printer servers are laserjet1 and laserjet2.

If I send jobs from Solaris machines to these two printers, they will be
printed. But if I use lpq on these Solaris machines when there are printing job,
it will take considerable long time to response and the response are either
JetDirect lpd: no entries
or
JetDirect lpd: system is not responding

The lpstat -p result is
printer lj4mp faulted. enabled since Thu Nov 30 17:54:59 PST 1995. available.
        JetDirect lpd: no entries

printer lj4m faulted. enabled since Tue Dec 12 16:13:41 PST 1995. available.
        JetDirect lpd: no entries

I tried to lpstat and lpsched the daemon. I also tried to delete and add the
printer in the admintool. It did not work. I noticed the it has difficulty to
connect to the laserjet1 and laserjet2, but I do not know why.

The tail /var/adm/logs/lpNet results are

12/12 16:24:00 p   156 <none> Received shutdown instruction from lpExec.
12/12 16:24:24 p  2216 <none> Starting lpNetParent.

I suspect you are using the lpr-style interfacing from the Solaris
machines directly to the JetDirect cards. You might do better to
make your setup such that the SunOs 4.1.4 is the print server, and
only one machine actually talks directly to the JetDirect cards
(not using the lpr-style interfacing).

The JetDirect cards seem to support only a single TCP connection, so
you can only inspect the print queue on them when it's empty! This is
why I suggest you don't use their lpr-style interfacing; it's too
broken for a multi-user/multi-computer environment.

However, if you run Solaris x86 (as we do), you cannot run the
Jetadmin software :-(  (which is a warning that I personally don't
actually do what I've suggested here, so there might be some further
problems of which I'm not aware).
