Mozilla 1.6 + Netscape 7.0 compose email problem (funky cursor keys)

Post by Rob_Lockh.. » Wed, 04 Feb 2004 15:10:14

Does anyone have any idea regarding why in Mozilla 1.6, the compose window
does not allow proper cursor manipulation (auto-word wrap on), and it has
actually wrapped several lines of text?  I'm running Solaris 8 on Sparc
Ultra-10 3D running Netscape 7.0 and Mozilla 1.6 both, running CDE, exhibit
this behavior.

Specifically, let's say that I begin to type a really long paragraph and
then I begin the next paragraph.  If I cursor up to the previous paragraph,
if I use left/right cursor keys and up/down keys (not on the numeric
keypad), it brings me either to the end of the paragraph, beginning or end
of the line, or other such unpredictable behaviors.  I have to essentially
click with the mouse the location of text I wish to edit (very painful).
In other words, other editors will do as I type; left-arrow = moveto the
left, right-arrow = vertical move up, etc.

I asked the sysadmin apply all the patches suggested in the README for
Netscape 7.0, it made no difference.  Since this happens only in Mozilla
1.6 and Netscape 7.0, it makes me think it's a machine-dependent problem.
This does not happen with Emacs, Xemacs, Nedit, pico, vi, or the older
Netscape 4.79.

Does anyone have a clue as to what this problem could be caused by, and a
possible solution?

Thanks in advance,
Rob Lockhart

P.S. I posted here versus the Mozilla forum since I'm not convinced it's a
Mozilla bug.

I guess this may be http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=188288
("[patch] caret movement  erratic with CTL enabled") ...

1. Mozilla 1.6 and 1.7 copy clipboard bug

Can someone with a good Xwindows background and some gdk experience
put some light on this Mozilla bug for Solaris.

The Mozilla bug number is: 233327 Cannot paste from clipboard

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=233317

It was introduced when a Linux bug number: 56219 was fixed and
patched.

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56219

with a gtk patch:

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=140466&action=view

One of the bug comments in bug id 233327 quotes;

This is a bug with old X servers on non-Linux platforms, in all
likelihood.  It
is not a "Linux" bug per se.

Who owns such old-X-server-burdened platforms?  The Mozilla code is
portable
only to the extent that owners step up and maintain ports.  Bryner
trying to
reproduce this on a Mozilla Foundation Solaris/x86 machine, maybe
he'll succeed
-- but if not, then again: those who see the bug and can help, must do
so for it
to be fixed.

Does anyone know what this old Xsever bug the author or the comment is
refering too?

Note the bug is probably important to both Solaris Sparc and x86 users
if
they like to see cut and paste work in the final release of 1.7.

Comments?
