ASCII to postscript

Post by Jem Richar » Fri, 26 Aug 1994 22:50:35

Anyone know of a utility that converts a plain text (ASCII)
document into a postscript one, without adding any headers etc. (I
need to print out plain text onto a postscipt only printer, and
don't want the headers from mp for example)? One that has a
landscape switch would be excellent.

Anyone seem such a thing for Solaris 1 and 2?

Thanks in advance,
jem.

There is a PD version of enscript, called nenscript, which does
what you need; you can get it via anonymous ftp from
calypso-2.oit.unc.edu
in
/pub/Linux/system/Printing/nenscript-1.13++.tar.z

To print printer the file plain.text on a PostScript printer:
nenscript -r -B plain.text
(-r for landscape, -B for no header)

N.B.: in spite of the "++", you don't need any C++ compiler.

For Solaris 2: /usr/lib/lp/postscript/postprint. See postprint(1).

For Solaris 2, how about: /usr/lib/lp/postscript/postprint
what they are doing there rather than /usr/bin or something more sensible, I'll
never know. See man postprint(1), postreverse(1).

Be careful with you path order if you have gnuchess installed, as they also have postprint in the bin sub-directory.

For SunOS 4, we used to use psf. Use archie to locate it.

I have been using a public domain binary, a2ps for several years and it works
wonders.

        For either, I believe /usr/openwin/bin/mp will convert all sorts of
        stuff (mail, plain ASCII, news, etc) to various formats. I usually
        use : mp -o -l {file} | lp
        To print stuff out. Works pretty decently.

        General SVR4 lp should be something like
        lp -Tsimple -ygroup=2 {file}
        to burp out a text file to a PostScript printer. Not sure if Sun's setup
        is the same as stock SVR4.{012} tho.
