SDS problem: databases and all sclices in critical mode

Post by Heinz Mülle » Thu, 29 May 2003 19:02:06

Hi Guys

Machine is a 280R with SOLARIS8 and newest patchcluster.
SDS 4.2.1 installed.

Our problem is:

I create the metadb as follows:

        metadb -a -f -c 3 c1t0d0s7 c1t1d0s7

Slices are also created and mirrored.

I run metatool. It shows the metadb in critical mode. Each of the slices
shows as critical. Yet disk or slice information shows it as critical. The
size of the slice shows as
356GB; not bad for a 9GB drive, 7MB slice.
(metadb and metstat on commandline shows that everything is OK)

any pointers???

regards
heinz

Do you see these lines in /etc/inetd.conf
# rpc.metad
100229/1        tli     rpc/tcp         wait    root    /usr/sbin/rpc.metad
rpc.metad
# rpc.metamhd
100230/1        tli     rpc/tcp         wait    root
/usr/sbin/rpc.metamhd  rpc.metamhd

If not add them , restart inetd

You have more than one issue. The metadbs are marked as critical
bacause they are both on the same controller. You can ignore this.
The size report looks like a bug. Check your patches.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it has (warning) when the
devices are on the same controller.

1. SDS 4.1 Trans Metadevice question, related to state database replicas

The SDS 4.1 User's Guide sez:

"The system must contain at least three state database replicas before
you can create a trans metadevice. "

Why? I am not trying to get around it or anything, I just am wondering why
this is necessary. Why wouldn't 2 be enough?

Thanks for any insights you can give me. Email cc's appreciated.
