telnet Unix use

Hi Everyone-Anyone?

I have recently beome interested in Unix operating systems, and am also
and advocate of "free" software - better "open source" software use and
developement. Part of my motivation is a result of dealing with and
using Microsoft operating systems as a consumer and being forced to
upgrade and reconfigure what computers I have and use with each
successive 'improvement' in MSFT's evolution. I am hoping to locate a
Unix server that I can interact with over the internet using telnet
through my laptop connection with a PCMCIA card sold to me by SPRINT
PCS, the cell telephone company that also vends these PCMCIA cards that
permit a wireless connection to the internet. The card is called
'Merlin'. If anyone has any information about how I can hook up to a
Unix server to run Unix commands and programs and obtain a login name
and password so that I can do this with the equipment I mentioned please
let me know. It is possible I can do some favor in return, or maybe I
can pass similar information on  to someone else and we can all gain
because more people will be able to communicate and exchange ideas and
information which, hypothetically, will be a slight improvement in a
world highly contorted and frustrated with misunderstanding and
confusion partly a result of poor communication. Thanks

The chances of someone giving you access to one of their Unix servers over
the public internert is nil, zilch no chance

Why dont you get Soalris x86 version and install it on a PC you got there?

Is is nil because he wants it free or nil because it is shell access?

Install Putty on your Win-PC and connect with ssh (Secure Shell, port 22)
(NOT telnet)

Unfortunately it will take you at least 10 years to discover the power of unix that way.
Try to find a unix guru that gives you some training first.

Assuming you have enough disk space, the better way is to partition your
drive so you have both Windows and Solaris or Linux.  By doing this, you can
then really explore Unix.

1. Telnet: is there a way of editing JOT files using telnet on a win95 system.

I am using win95 telnet to access my work station (sgi indy) in school.
I was wondering if there is a way of editing JOT files. Also, I am trying
to ftp from my house to work. When I telnet into my workstation,
I first have to go to the mainstation before I can access my station, but
my ftp only connects to the mainstation. Is there a way or a software that
will connect me to the mainstation then to my workstation.

Thanx, agabas
