Help on Configuring Console

Post by Daren L. Jan » Sun, 16 Oct 1994 20:32:18

We recently purchased a WYSE-51 terminal to act as the console
on a Sparcserver 1000 running solaris 2.3. I never changed a thing
on the wyse terminal and plugged it in to port 'A' on the 1000 with
a standard RS-232 null modem cable. I then turned on the 1000
and the terminal came on as the console. I thought to myself that
that was to easy. When the OS finally booted I noticed it was putting
a "hostname console login:" and a "tty login:" prompt to the terminal.
I fired up admintool from my x terminal and disable serial port 'A' to get
rid of the extra tty login process on the terminal.

The process that was looking for the console was using a -T SUN option
and I wanted to change it to vt320 so I called Sun Support after I looked
through the SAF stuff for about an hour with no luck. I really didn't think
it would be in that OS utility since the terminal is basically on from power
up time. Sun Support first suggested that I change it through the admin
tool. I explained to him that I had to disable port 'A' from there since some
other process had taken control of the port. He seemed puzzed by this and
told me that the terminal was being controled by an EPROM (that makes sense).

Anyway I don't think the terminal is configured right because I noticed the
WYSE terminal stuck in caps mode. I turned off the power to the
terminal after trying a few software resets. That was a mistake, by turning off
the power to the terminal/console it crashed the 1000. Does anybody have a
clue as to why it did that? Also, I have scanned answerbook but can't seem
to find an area on console terminal configuration.

Thank's in advance

It is strange you needed to disable the ttya ttymon.  The install
process should have taken care of that.  (I don't know whether it
normally does, but if it doesn't, that's a bug.

To change the type of terminal on /dv/console, you need to change the following
inittab line:

co:234:respawn:/usr/lib/saf/ttymon -g -h -p "`uname -n` console login: " -T sun -d /dev/console -l console -m ldterm,ttcompat

If the Wyse prints cap only, it may be because you logged in with a alls
capps loginname.  Because of silly compatibility, this makes the stty
driver do an all caps conversion.  (switch off with stty -lcase).

Switching of your console terminal causes the system to receive a
framing error which is interpreted as a break which causes the
system to jump into the PROM monitor.  Just "go" should
work.

1. Color and Consoles Need help getting configured......

Hello,

1. I need help getting colors on my console with bash shell.

I have RedHat 2.1 and I am using bassh shell. I have editted the
.bash_profile and added the line .`dircolors` as the redhat docs say and I
still can't get colors on my console. I used a scrpt to test colors and it
worked to show all the colors are there.

2. Can you do a RedHat install over a serial cable to a machine that does
not have a CD-Rom?

How do you configure linux to do this?

Last I want to allow a friend to be able to log onto my box and I am not
sure how to configure /etc/initab I tried adding a line to it but the line
I was given did not work.

Thanks for help Email me please.
