Hi,
i have a  sun fire  V 240 running on single cpu. The OS is solaris 9.
i would like to know as to what parameters i need to monitor , if i
want to find  the cpu  performance and also if i require one more cpu.

As a rule of thumb:

uptime

if showing a load average of >1.0, a second CPU would increase the speed.

Open a terminal window and try this command, I think it is a very good
command.

% vmstat 1

will show something like below, in the left and side you have the "r b
w" field, if the "r" field says 1 or higher you have a runnable process
that is waiting for CPU resources.

If the field "sr" is moving above say 10 or so you are low on RAM.

if the field "b" is showing you have processes that is waiting for IO,
disks network and so.
