Two Questions: Popper & Syslog

Two Questions: Popper & Syslog

Post by David Elkin » Thu, 15 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Okay, so here are two things that I'm wondering about:

1) I tried accessing a mailbox via pop3 and received a couple of errors.
The mail files are regular text email messages, with uuencoded files
attached. In netscape mail, I GPF and nothing comes through. In Eudora
Light, it begins to download the message and stops. Nothing. So, is it
the uuencoded file causes the problem with the other two programs? I
tested the popper by telnetting right into the pop3 port and everything
works (including RETR).

2) Syslog has stopped working altogther. So, this is what I did:

# /usr/sbin/syslogd -d 1>/dev/console 2>&1

This, minus the -d for debug, is exactly what I have in
/etc/rc2.d/S74syslog. And, here is what I got back on the console:

#getnets() found 1 addresses, they are: 0.0.0.0.2.2
off & running....
init
amiloghost() testing 206.58.36.3.2.2
I am loghost
cfline(*.err;kern.notice;auth.notice;user.none          /dev/console)
cfline(*.err;kern.debug;daemon.notice;mail.crit;user.none
/var/adm/messages)
cfline(*.alert;kern.err;daemon.err;user.none            operator)
cfline(*.alert;user.none                                root)
cfline(*.emerg;user.none                                *)
cfline(mail.debug                       /var/log/syslog)
cfline(daemon.debug                                     /var/adm/ftp-debug.log)
cfline(auth.info                                       /var/adm/termlog)

With, a segmentation fault - core dump of course.

If anyone can help me with one or both of these, please reply. Thanks,
David Elkins

1. Pop3 popper - how do I disable messages to syslog file

We have SCO UNIX OpenServer 3.0 and use a Pop3 but I get masses
of messages filling my /usr/adm/syslog file with info like

popper: (v1.831beta) Servicing request from ...
popper: (v1.831beta) Ending request from ...

/etc [168] ls -l pop*
-rwxr-xr-x   1 bin      bin       203495 Mar 14  1994 popper

There are no man pages for this. How do I switch the messages off?

I also get masses of Pop3 processes lying around:

    root 27464   351  0  Apr 25   ?        0:00 popper

Why do they not die instead of lying around for 2 weeks?

What version is Pop3 in the imap-3.5 that Bill Campbell mentioned
recently? Thanks for any help.
