Adaptec 2940 support?

Adaptec 2940 support?

Post by Richard Flo » Fri, 02 Dec 1994 07:32:19

I see an "AIC-7770" reference in the Sun x86 Solaris compatibility list,
which (I believe) is the chip on the Adaptec 2940, but Solaris 2.4 seems
to just puke in the middle of booting with this controller (Pentium-90
motherboard).  Is the PCI 2940 controller _really_ supported?
If not, when?  The list of PCI controllers supported by Solaris seems
to be basically: NCR.  Not very available around here.

Also, how much memory do you _really_ need to run 2.4?  My 16-meg is a little
tight on Unixware, but I can still mostly get away with it.  WIth 16 meg,
Solaris 2.4 just pages constantly.  Is there some configuration trick to
get the OS smaller?  The meg-or-so of license-manager processes is pretty
annoying.  Can one compile without them, in some sort of fixed-license mode?

... rest deleted ...

The 2940 is the PCI board and has a 7870 chip on it....

I'm hopeful that the Adaptec 2940 support will be on Driver Update 4.

To boot with an Adaptec 2949 Controller you need at least the "Driver Update 3+"
(avaliable on ftp.uu.net). Driver Update 3+ is contains the pre-relase for
the 2940 Controller, still unsupported, will be supported with the DECEMBER 94 Update.

with the driver i found
ftp.uu.net:/vendor/sun/sun-doc/x86-driver/2.4/UNSUPPORTED

Except if you have a standard Intel 90 PCI motherboard.
Then they tell you you need to run with the CACHE turned off.
        Yeah, right.
        Back to Unixware.

It's still in beta test.  Beta software isn't something that has all
the bugs worked out.  The Cache is important enough for most
users that I would think Sun will take the time to fix this problem
for the final release.
