utmp/wtmp problems in Solaris 2.3

Post by Tom Man » Tue, 28 Jun 1994 21:16:30

Hi All,

I know this has been beaten to death before, but I wasn't listening at
the time :(

We've got a machine with lots of users running Solaris 2.3 and sometimes
we get users who are not logged in but are shown in a "who" listing.
Someone out there has figured out how to fix this!  Could you pass the
info/program(s) on to me?

This info is not in the FAQ, but if it's appropriate, I'd be glad to
place it on our anonymous ftp server for occasions like this :-)

Post or email and thanks for your help.

Best regards,

Tom

There are some patches and there will be more.

Current patches are:

101533-03: OpenWindows 3.3: utmp not being updated properly
101615-01: SunOS 5.3: utmp entries were not being reaped in Solaris 5.3

More will come in patch 101318-50 (or whatever the number after the -
will be when it's released) and patch 101615-02.

Patch 101318-50 will include a daemon to reap left-over
utmp entries (and lots of other patches).  Patch 101615-02
will contain patches to finger, w, wall, etc.

Sun released a pair of patches for this. They depend on each other
for some reason so ask for them both. I haven't had the chance to install
them yet but I am assured they work. Get patches 101533 and 101615
and the troubles with utmp should well disappear.

1. utmp & wtmp problems in Solaris 2.3 - HELP!

Hi

After using a simple program to fix up utmp when there are phantom
users on the system, my utmp problems now seem to be minor.  However,
there seems to be a definite problem with logging users in wtmp.

Last tells me:

ship when the *logging* does not even work?  Does any blessed soul
have a patch that works?

Right now, it looks like xdm is screwing up, as all ftp/login sessions
seem to have been logged.  However, I can't confirm this.  For all I
know, it could be libc's routines that are screwed.

On an aside, does sun have a fix out that works for the utmp ghost-user
problem?
