U5 won't boot from CD after adding 2nd HD

U5 won't boot from CD after adding 2nd HD

Post by Rick » Sat, 20 Apr 2002 02:44:43

Newbie problem:

I got my U5 yesterday (my first unix box!), replaced the HD with a
newer one (IBM) and installed Solaris 8 from CD (downloaded) with no
problems, so the CD's work and booting from CDROM did.

Today I put the original HD back in but on the secondary IDE line with
the CDROM. I set this HD to master and the CDROM to slave with the
jumpers as I used a normal IDE lead, not a CS one.

Format can see both HD's, and File Manager can read the CDROM, but
when I tried to boot from CD (by typing "boot cdrom" at ok) I get the
following messages:

can't read disk label
can't open disk label package
evaluating boot cdrom
can't open boot device

The system then boots from the IBM HD as normal.

I'm completely new to Unix/Solaris and Sun's - can anyone help with
this problem? Does the CDROM need to be set as master to boot from? If
so, will this slow down the HD on slave?

Rick (Solaris newbie!)

So the cdrom used to be master?

Right.  Note that 'cdrom' is just an alias for

does, you'll want to use 'nvalias' to change your cdrom alias so you
don't have to type the whole thing out.

No, but the alias has to point to a real bootable device.

Brilliant - you solved my problem and increased my (currently very
small on Solaris) knowledge - thank you very much indeed.

Best regards,
Rick.

Actually, you've probably increased your SPARC hardware and OBP
knowledge.  This stuff is all below the level of the OS.  I assume you'd
need to know the same thing if you were booting Linux on it.
