I've put some doc my manager asked me to write about troubleshooting sun
diskless boots.

Feedback is desired.

What about DHCP?

We don't have any sun diskless machines that are also DHCP clients.  But
I'll add something about it if someone describes how it works.

Thanks.

1. diskless boot (autoinstall) problem

A coworker's client recently purchased an ultra 60.

Naturally, the first thing we want to do with the machine is
autoinstall it.

When we start the autoinstall, it gets stuck.  Here's what we see with
snoop.  "on.radsci" is a sun boot server; "ric.radsci" is the ultra 60
we're trying to boot diskless (autoinstall).

   BROADCAST -> (broadcast)  RARP C Who is 8:0:20:9b:f9:33 ?
on.radsci.uci.edu -> ric.radsci.uci.edu RARP R 8:0:20:9b:f9:33 is
128.200.63.44, ric.radsci.uci.edu
ric.radsci.uci.edu -> on.radsci.uci.edu TFTP Read "80C83F2C" (octet)
on.radsci.uci.edu -> ric.radsci.uci.edu TFTP Data block 1 (512 bytes)
ric.radsci.uci.edu -> on.radsci.uci.edu TFTP Ack  block 1
on.radsci.uci.edu -> ric.radsci.uci.edu TFTP Data block 2 (512 bytes)
on.radsci.uci.edu -> ric.radsci.uci.edu TFTP Data block 2 (512 bytes)
on.radsci.uci.edu -> ric.radsci.uci.edu TFTP Data block 2 (512 bytes)
on.radsci.uci.edu -> ric.radsci.uci.edu TFTP Data block 2 (512 bytes)
on.radsci.uci.edu -> ric.radsci.uci.edu TFTP Data block 2 (512 bytes)

Could there be some kind of firmware problem in the ultra 60?  We
tried more than one boot server (the first was a sun, the second was
an SGI), with identical results.  Our boot servers are configured by
an automated process (part of our autoinstall system), so there isn't
much room for human error there.

BTW, perhaps only coincidentally, the CDROM that came with the ultra
60 doesn't seem to work.  I mention it only on the off chance that the
two problems are somehow related.
