file format of 'quotas' (Solaris disk quota system)?

Post by Xiannong Men » Sat, 10 Feb 1996 04:00:00

I need help.

What is the format of 'quotas' used to turn on the quota system. I read
the man page on 'quotaon', it says one needs to have a file named 'quotas' on
the root directory, refer 'edquota' for more detail. When I read 'edquota', it
refers back to 'quotaon' for detail. ---> <----!!

Any one please provide the format of the file 'quotas'? Please email
if possible.

     Thank you very much.

What you need to do is, as root, touch the file quotas in the root
directory of the file system on which you want to run quotas and then
use edquota to define quotas for your users. Then you can use quotaon to
enable quotas. I'd also use quotacheck to make sure the initial quotas
match the users' disk allocation.

You'll also need to modify the file /etc/vfstab and add the quota option
to the mount statement for the quota-ed file system so that quotas are
enabled on boot up.

1. Quotas : Format of quota.users & quota.groups ?

Hi,

I am running Linux-FT with kernel 1.2.13 and quota patches. I would like
to enable quotas in order to control memory usage by apps (I'm trying to
debug an app that keeps grabbing all system memory, preventing me from
typing kill).

In order to enable quotas, files called quota.users and quota.groups
need to be present in the root directory. The 'edquota'
program is supposed to be used to set these up, but it simply invokes vi,
expecting the user to know the file format. The man pages say that
the file format is 'inscrutable', but don't actually describe it anywhere!

Anyone know the correct format ?

Thanks in advance,

Steve
