"hanging" open sockets

We are running Sybase 4.9.? on SunOS 5.2. Previously, under
SunOS 4.1.2 if someone powered off a PC with open sockets
to the sybase server, those sockets would eventually 'time-out'
and close.

Not so under 5.2. Anyone seen this problem (and perhaps even
have a solution?)

You should try the socket library patch 101014-nn (where "nn" is a two
digit number that is revved up frequently). for Solaris 2.2

There was a file descriptor leak problem that left some open connections.

In general you should install all the mandatory patches that you can get
through the Sun support channels and this is one of them.
