Cluster with two Fire 280R to install Oracle

Post by Urko Benit » Wed, 31 Aug 2005 18:54:53

Hello,

We have two Sun Fire 280R and one Sun v890. We've installed Oracle
Financials + Oracle Database at v890 and we hava a "hot" backup onto one of
the Fire 280R. We do the "hot" backup with a snap shot and doing rsync
later. We must change this because "it's not all secure that we wants"

My question is:

1.- Can we do than the two 280R act as a single computer (Cluster)
2.- Can we do Hot backup with Oracle implementing Clustered or with
replication, load balancing, ...

What are your recomendations?

Thank,
Urko

What's insecure about using rsync exactly ??

Well, we have been doing

... here some scripts command ....

/usr/sbin/fssnap -F ufs -o
maxsize=1000m,bs=/opt/scrach1.bck,unlink  /oracle/prod/proddata

.... some scripts commands ...

/usr/local/bin/rsync -arpog /mnt/backup_prod/. /mnt/v280_proddata/.

But we have "some errors" when the backup script end, like Oracle file
inconsistences, so, thats is "unsecure".

We are planing to mount "parallel oracle" or "replicate" onto v280R, but we
are "a bit loss"

Thanks,
Urko

Don't you have to do some stuff from Oracle as well to bring the DB in a
consistent state? I am not an oracle specialist (or DBA) but the above
fssnap command only ensures that file system is consistent (on the OS level).

Well what do you expect? You'll probably get a good filesystem
with fssnap, but your DB-files will certainly be corrupt. Put
the DB in online backup mode then do a snapshot. Or use some
backup software that is "Oracle-aware"

Nothing to do with rsync.
Dont use fssnap - it's unsuitable for a task like this.
Use the Oracle supplied hot backupware..
Im no Oracle DBA, I just work with them occasionally
so I cant give specifics sorry. Try a different newsgroup
for Oracle hot backup scenarios.

Wrong newsgroup for that too : >

It _can_ be suitable. But not in the way Urko uses it.
Did he (Urko) remember about shutting down/putting it into hot-backup mode
before using rsync ?

Cluster with two Fire 280R to install Oracle

Yes, we put into BACKUP MODE, each table space, and then i do the backup,
but the question is *NOT* that.

What i'm asking is:

If i put the two solaris 280R onto a cluster can i obtain a "redundant"
enviroment or not.

And, how can i put the two 280 into a cluster? I've a Sun Storage A1000
connected to one 280, can i connect two 280 to the A1000 and then mount a
cluster to install oracle as a secondary server?

I have the main server onta Sun 890 and we need to we up 24x7 and when we
put into "backup mode" it take a lot o time to backup, so if we put the
oracle into a cluster (made with solaris cluster) or made Oracle in
parallel mode without solaris cluster, this is my questions

What is the better solution?
Solaris Cluster or Oracle Parallel?

Thanks everybody,
Urko

I think he needs to read up on Oracle "hot backups" and RMAN.

Let me answer the first question you ask:

According to Sun's documentation, you need at least 2 A1000's to do
what you're asking, but yes, you can use two 280R's
and use them as a basis for a cluster.

http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-0171/6mg06p96s?a=view

I'm hearing you say two different things.

1) It takes a long time to backup.
2) I want redundancy.

Which leads me to the conclusion that you're *really* asking:

3) If I use OPS/RAC or Solaris clustering, can I make my backups go faster?

You're not going to like this answer:

probably not.

The OPS/RAC solution ends up with the bottleneck at the disks. This is
because both nodes share the same disk subsystem that is where your
database datafiles live. I'm not enough of an Oracle guy to tell you how
well a node serving queries and a node doing backups is going to work.

The Solaris Cluster ends up with the bottleneck at the server, because you
only run the DB on one cluster node.

You may be better off in doing something along the lines of using Veritas'
FlashSnap or mirroring + short hot backup to ensure consistency to backup
the database essentially offline from your main IO activity (which is what
will be slowing down your current backup).

1. Two Sun Fire V120 servers in a cluster ?

Soon I'll be getting two Sun Fire V120 servers. Is it possible to put them
in cluster ?
Should I use Sun Cluster software ? Does it come with server or need to be
purchased separately ?
Server should act as general Internet server (for mail it runs sendmail,
squid as proxy server, DNS server, and couple of other services). Can those
general serevices be clustered (service failover from one node to other) or
I need to have cluster aware apps for that.
I would put some FC cards to connect to external EMC disks (shared disks).
I don't know much about cluster technology so this would be the way for me
to learn it. I just want to know if I have right equipment for that.
