ping -g 'gateway-IP' 'host-IP' DOESN'T work!

Hello guys,

I have a machine with two interfaces, each connected to
a gateway. This two gateways are then connected to a common
network and I want to ping another router in that network over
the two interfaces.

Looks like this:
                        Gateway 1
                           ----
               ------------|  |------------
              | Subnet A   ----            |
            ----
Machine    |  |                Subnet C   Router
            ----
              | Subnet B   ----            |
               ------------|  |------------
                           ----
                        Gateway 2

Now if I type following on my machine it doesn't work:

ping -g 'IP in Subnet A of Gateway 1' 'Router-IP-address'

But if I do a ping (Defaultgateway is 'IP in Subnet A of Gateway 1'
(without -g) it works fine:

ping 'Router-IP-address'

Can someone give me a hint? Thanks in advance!

Cheers, Walter

Maybe there's another gateway involved? If you do a traceroute Router,
you may see another IP address before it reaches Router. I don't think
you can specify multiple gateways after -g. I tried ping -g [that
another gateway] [destination] and it hangs for me.

Many routers are configured to block packets that use the source routing
options, because they have been used in the past to bypass filtering
routers.  On a Cisco router this is done with "no ip source-route".

1. 'ping' sees route but 'telnet' doesn't??

Hi,

I'm connecting to one ISP (T-Online) via isdn/ipppd, which

seems to work fine.  But when I try to go to my other ISP (where

my mail is) I get the seemingly contradictory result that I can

ping it just fine, but when I try to telnet to it, it says "no

route to host".  I can think of no explanation for this (and

certainly no fix.  Here's the evidence:

I have a good default route (ping has no trouble).  Is someone blocking

me (if so, why doesn't it say that.)  Any plausible explanation would be

welcome, a solution for it would be fabulous :-)

Thanks - Ed
