zs3:ring buffer overflow problem

Post by Global O » Wed, 23 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi all:

I have one FW-1 station with unlimited license and have quite a lot of ip addresses behind of it, which also does NAT. Right now it works fine except one problem; at console, it keeps giving messages:

NOTICE: zs3:ring buffer overflow

Whenever this message shows up, the system is either gertting very slow or just frozen up for around a minute! I am aware of zs3 mouse problem and I had seen this before on other sparcs, but this time is different, it is driving me nuts...:-(, I can hardly work on windows, not to mention that it slow down the whole system. It happens even the mouse was sit there doing nothing!!!

Here is from Sun's FAQ:

The problem is caused by the kernel running at a high priority (to
repaint the screen on scrolls) for too long, and locking out incoming
characters.  This causes the ring buffer message, and attempting to
print this error causes the silo overflow.  The new kernel module
provided adjusts the CPU priority correctly to avoid this situation.

I have tried a lot of things on FW-1 but without any suolution, could anyone here gives some ideas about this?

Increasing either physicall memory or kernel memory allocation did not do anything good.

Thanks in advance

well, if you're willing to throw money at it, you could always just buy a
serial card with "real" serial port support
eg: www.magma.com

1. NOTICE: zs3:ring buffer overflow

I occasionally get this message on the console of a SS10 running Solaris 2.3,
after a hang of about 90 seconds.  The comp.sys.sun.admin FAQ says that zs3
is the mouse channel, but nothing about how to avoid these messages.

Is there a way to avoid these messages, or eliminate the disruption to
the multiple users on the machine?
