NeWSprint 2.5 ... adding a printer

Post by Jordan Hay » Sun, 22 Aug 1993 03:11:20

I just installed NeWSprint 2.5 on my Sparc/LX running Solaris 2.1, and
I went to add a printer (a QMS-PS/410), and got this as a result:

-----

dodge# add_np_printer -t

[ ... ]

Configuring system for a(n) PostScript printer named "stoli"
connected to "dodge" on device type "bpp"
OK [y | n]? y
Defining port monitor for tcp/listen ...
Invalid request, tcp already exists
Port monitor, tcp, is not running

Do you want to add another printer [y | n]?

-----

Someone suggested that sac was hosed?  So I tried this:

dodge# sacadm -l
PMTAG          PMTYPE         FLGS RCNT STATUS     COMMAND
tcp            listen         -    0    FAILED     /usr/lib/saf/listen tcp #
zsmon          ttymon         -    0    ENABLED    /usr/lib/saf/ttymon #

Indeed.  So then I tried this:

dodge# sacadm -e -p tcp
Port monitor, tcp, is not running

-----

Help?

Thanks,

/jordan

Straight from our crack Sun printing team:

    I have seen problems with printing when the SAF isn't configured right.
    The last time I saw this problem, it was because the port monitor wasn't
    configured right.  You could look at the output from "pmadm -l" to see
    how things are configured.

    To try and recover from this, you probably want to delete the three entries
    for printing from the port monitor configuration.  You use pmadm -r
    for this:

    i.e.
    pmadm -r -p tcp -s lp
    pmadm -r -p tcp -s lpd
    pmadm -r -p tcp -s 0

    then maybe try enabling the SAF and see if it shows up as enabled.

    ******  NOTE -- I've attached his script at the end which does this stuff  *****

    sacadm -e -p tcp

    then try adding back the entries for the port monitor.

    pmadm -a -p tcp -s lp -i root -m `nlsadmin \
                            -o /var/spool/lp/fifos/listenS5` -v `nlsadmin -V`

    u_addr=`lpsystem -A`

    pmadm -a -p tcp -s lpd -i root -m \
                    `nlsadmin -o /var/spool/lp/fifos/listenBSD -A "\\x${u_addr}"` \
                            -v `nlsadmin -V`

    new_addr=`lpsystem -A | cut -b1-4`
                    tail=`lpsystem -A | awk '{pos = index($0, "0203")+4
                                    print substr($0, pos, length($0)-pos+1)}'`
                    new_addr=`echo ${new_addr}0ACE${tail}`

                    pmadm -a -p tcp -s 0 -i root -m \
                    `nlsadmin -c /usr/lib/saf/nlps_server -A "\\x${new_addr}"` \
                            -v `nlsadmin -V`

    I have some shell code that will do the proper SAF setup if you want it.
    I'm not sure what the state of the SAF is on Solaris 2.1.  I don't know how many
    bugs it has or what patches there are.  You could try adding only one service
    at a time to the port monitor until you can determine which one is causing
    the SAF to fail.  Is your listen patch for 2.1 or 2.2?

1. Newsprint 2.5 printer problems

I just install Newsprint 2.5 to run an sparcprinter and got
the following problems:

1) when I senda job from the server it is printing OK but
the job is not removed from the queue and stay there as if
were still printing.

2) If I try to print from a remote sun I got the following
message:

Warning: sparc is down:  %%[ System Error: Unable to map print buffer to disk
Rank   Owner      Job             Files                       Total Size
active lovera     339             .login                      639 bytes

Any ideas of how should I solve this problems?

                Thanks a lot,
