rdump from AIX to Solaris

rdump from AIX to Solaris

Post by Helmut Knee » Tue, 07 Oct 1997 04:00:00

I am trying to backup filesystems (as root of course)  from an AIX
system (Version 3.2) to a Solaris system (Version 2.5.1) using the rdump
comand. For some (strange) reason it doesn't allow me to do it, and it
says something like Permission denied.
It might has to do with the fact that I am running Solaris as NIS+
server which makes it also impossible to remote login onto that machine
as root.
If you have an idea, let me know.

Thank you!!!

rdump from AIX to Solaris

Hi Helmut,

You are on the right track. Your AIX box running rdump requires the Sun
machine trusts it. You may have to do some work on the Sun side.

1. rsh'ing AIX rdump from Sun

I'm trying to back up my RS/6000's (AIX 3.2.2) to remote tape
drives on Sun's using rdump, with the rdump initiate from the
Sun via rsh.  Something like this:

rsh aixhost -n /etc/rdump 0bsdf 100 6000 54000 sunhost:/dev/nrst9 /

I can run this OK under root authority, with proper equivalencing.
However, I have a special "backup" userid which I'd like to run
the actual job.  "backup" is equivalenced and can do general
rsh commands on the RS/6000 from the Sun.  When I try to run the
above command as "backup," from the Sun however, I get:

rcmd: socket: Permission denied

User "backup" is not only equivalenced on the RS/6000, but also
is in the system, staff, bin, sys, and adm groups.
