Solaris 2.6

Solaris 2.6

Post by Christopher T. Kigh » Sun, 01 Mar 1998 04:00:00

Hello all,
I apologize if any of these questions seem commonplace, but I need to
ask them. I own two computers, One of which is runing Windows 98, and one of
which is Running Windows NT server 4.0. I'm considering one if not both
computers to Solaris, and I'm wondering what advantages Solaris has over
either OS.

1) How Easy is it to install and configure
2) What's the Difference between the Desktop that comes with Solaris and the
CDE?
3) Does Solaris deal with Plug-n-Play Devices (Modems mainly)
4) How much is Solaris x86 OS (workstation license for 2 computers 1 user),
and the CDE for a student?

That's it, I thank all of you in advance for your time, patience and
dedication towards such an awesome Operating system.

                            regards,
            Christopher T. Kight

That depends what you want to do.  If you want to run Windows apps then
you should not change.  If you want to run mass market games then you
should not change.  If you need a very stable predictable system and/or
you develop for high end apps you may want to consider a change.

If you are familiar with installing Microsoft products and not Unices it
can be difficult.  If you are familiar with Unices it is easy.  There
are less questions asked during install than current Win NT or Win 95.

None.  Solaris currently ships with CDE as the standard desktop.

Quote:> 3) Does Solaris deal with Plug-n-Play Devices (Modems mainly)

No.  In that respect it is the same as NT 4.0 without pnp support
installed.

That you will have to get from someone else.

1. can't read Solaris 2.6 x86 hard disk on Solaris 2.6 Ultra-1 ?!?

I was going to use this hard drive to move large files from my
Ultra to my Pentium PC for CD-R backup, but upon "boot -r" on
the Ultra I saw an error about "invalid geometry" on sd3, the
drive I had formatted on my PC to be ufs.  And now of course
I can't even "prtvtoc" this disk ("Unable to read Disk geometry"),
so mounting it is seemingly out of the question.

What's the problem?  Was I naive to assume the a ufs on a Solaris
system would be the same regardless of CPU type?  I really don't
want to use Ethernet to transmit potentially gigabytes of data
on a regular basis :-(...

Please reply via email (and post here, of course), as I don't
get a chance to keep up with the newsgroup as regularly as I
would wish.  Thanks.
