How to apply the patch #106541-07?

Post by Dominic La » Thu, 02 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Sunsolve recently releases the kernel patch #106541-07.  But
this patch requires yet another patch #107544-02 (fsck patch),
which is not available in the recommendated patch category.
Without this patch, the kernel patch cannot be applied.

Any ideas how to get #107544-02?  Or should I be forced to
be the contract customer in order to obtain this patch?

Thanks for your advices.

Dominic

this has happened before, and usually it is fixed (i.e. 107544-02
gets a "recommended" or "security" flag, too) really soon. check
back after one or two days.

How to apply the patch #106541-07?

Well, I'm not sitting near to the Machine we applied this patch to, but
as far as I remember there is no Problem if 106541-05 is applied. Well,
I'm not sure about the first six digits. We did this with an x86
Multiprocessor System and it worked.

But we did this with an Machine in Multiuser mode and it paniced during
the patch. So don't do it in Multiuser mode

107544-02 is now available at sunsolve.sun.com.

BTW, in README of 106541-07, note 4 states that patch 107462-01
should also be installed, which is not available at SunSolve. (This
does not prevent installation of 106541-07.)

1. Problem with Solaris 7 Kernel patch 106541-15 and catopen/catgets

[[ PLEASE DON'T SEND ME EMAIL COPIES OF POSTINGS ]]

In patch 106541-15 we've fixed the security problems for
the NLSPATH problems.

Unfortunately, we cannot fix this properly and have everything still
work exactly as before.

Chowning the files to root helps some; installing them in system
directories also.  Not requiring NLSPATH to be set also helps.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean my:
"other applications which run under non-root user IDs can not run suid program"

I think we changed it such that suid programs can only open root-owned
catalogues.  I'd need to check.

I did the code and it's pretty fascist.

I'd need to know a bit more about what you're doing.  That way
I can either explain to you why what you're doing is a possible
security hole or whether we're perhaps too strict.
