After that big Solaris 10 marketing blitz campaign over a year ago about
how Solaris 10 is going to revolutionize your life with this, and that
and blah blah blah and nothing materializes but a prototype of something
yet to come in the real release of Solaris 11 it's just that: blah.
Speculation. Make sure you hold your breath for ZFS.

Sorry Dude, not a troll, long time Solaris user and fan just p'off with
the garbage being fed from the marketing machine on S10 and mad at
myself because I chomped on S10 when I knew better.

I think it was pretty clear that ZFS would not make Solaris 10's initial
release fairly long before S10 was released.

ZFS will show up in S10, not just S11.

no - it was not. the noise on this group made it plain that it was a late
decision.

Not to Sun marketing, as it seems. German ix magazine from Feb. 2005
had an adverti*t about the 10 advantages of Solaris 10, where
Nr. 8 is "Revolutionary new file system for highest data security and
scalability". I do remember seeing this ad frequently when I already had
Solaris 10 FCS running on a test machine.

Nr. 6 on the list was "compatible to Linux for x86 platforms", which
I guess means Project Janus.

Overall, I guess marketing was talking about Solaris 10 as "Solaris
10 FCS plus all the updates there might be in the future". At that
time I often thought about how much discussion Microsoft would've
caused with such an announcement ..

Casper owes us a url pointing to definitive information that shows that
ZFS was not going into the initial cut "fairly long" - that would be at
least 3-4 months before release. google isn't showing me that.

(of course it's different for Solaris,

Our standard rule appaers to be something like "Solaris X + the first
two updates".

But in the good old days, updates were quarterly releases that came out
three times a year. S10U1 ???? Let alone S10U2 !!!!

So you think that DTrace, SMF, Zones, and all the other goodies new with
S10 are just "a prototype of something yet to come"?

I'll grant you that ZFS is late, but I'd rather it was delivered late but
correct than on time and riddled with bugs.

I've been using S10 for almost 2 years now, and I think it's a great
improvement over S9.

I wouldn't be surprised if ZFS is one of the reasons why S10U1 hasn't
been released yet.

No kidding!

The info. tidbit was only to reassure those that it is coming, but
better late than never as this is a totally cool idea and this
innovation is worth the wait. Who else has even proposed such a
filesystem? Anyone?

I've seen a few third-party papers on ZFS implementation and use, albeit
beta ones, where the overall results have been *very* positive. Rather
than moan about ZFS being late, perhaps the nay sayers should find a
comparable file system even on paper (ZFS is *real* and being refined
*now*).
