E450 PCI bus speed - 33 or 66 MHz

Post by Andrei A. Dergatch » Thu, 16 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I was just wondering what's a clock of bus of my E450.

/usr/platform/sun4u/sbin/prtdiag
tells me its 33 MHz, which seems to be a bit slow
comparing to what www.sun.com says - where's 66 MHz ?

I checked dejanews and found something relevant like these posts:

http://x44.deja.com/[ST_rn=ps]/getdoc.xp?AN=427631820&CONTEXT=945252625.1057554433&hitnum=1
http://x44.deja.com/[ST_rn=ps]/getdoc.xp?AN=452812161&CONTEXT=945252625.1057554433&hitnum=3

but still I'm not sure - it is possible that prtdiag reports
clock for external ports, while the system uses 66 MHz for
internal ?

Rgds,

Andrei

It's probably 100MHz.

That's the PCI bus; you only have 33MHz PCI devices installed; prtdiag
doesn't show slots without devices.

The second line of "prtdiag" output shows the system clock frequency;
that is the bus speed.

In my "Ultra Enterprise 450 Server Owner's Guide", there is a
table on Page 59 giving the Bus-Speed of the various PCI-slots.
In short, 7 slots (1-3 and 7-10) are 33MHz, while 3 slots (4,5,6)
support both, 33 and 66 MHz.

Hope this helps.

we have 2 E450 and both have 8 pci slots. from the bottom up they are
33,33,33,66,66,66,33,33 MHZ.  if you open up the sun it has a pic. showing
which one is which.

the E450 features 6 independent PCI busses, with 10 slots.
slot 4-6 support a clockrate of 66 MHz. If you have no card
in those slots, they won't be reported by prtdiag.

There's a lot mor information in the "UE 450 Server Owner's Guide",
coming in print with the machine and available as answerbook, e.g.
on http://docs.sun.com/

note that opening it up, will stop the box, I blieve :-)

[unlike old non-"enterprise" machines where you could just lift the
cover and take a quick peek]
